Agreed with jyossarian, it's not 1977, it's not the 80's, etc. The city is VERY different these days. I've ridden home along the Hudson Greenway (MUP, whatever) after concerts in Central Park at 10pm or even later, and that's heading north through the perhaps less desirable neighborhoods. Don't sweat it.
