They certainly look wider than classic "pencil stays" to my eye. When I get the bike to my apartment for the restoration I'll measure them compared to a couple other frames I have handy.

per the catalog specs they are "aero seat stays" and "oval chain stays" so probably shaped somewhat for cutting wind resistance.
