The 89 has indexed shifters with a 7 speed hyperglide freehub. It is my only indexed shifting bike and it it very nice. I wouldn’t worry about the hoop or lack of. It actually is a bit of a pain with the biopace 28t front small chainring when putting on a new chain if the chain is a bit long. That oval ring causes some bouncing of a loose chain. I changed out my biopace 28 for a round 24t, and can get 5 of the rear sprocket gears without the chain bouncing off the hoop.
