Olympic Mixed Medley Relay Triathlon

So I didn’t get a chance to watch the Olympic triathlon mixed relay. But there was one question I had about the distances. Thought maybe it’d be a good discussion, and/or someone would have the answer (which I haven’t been able to find). But how did they come up with the distances? When I first heard about the new event a few years ago, I thought they’d simply divide the Olympic 1.5k/40k/10k distances by four, and each of the four team members would complete that distance for their ‘super sprint’ leg of the race. I.e. each athlete would do:
Swim 375,
Bike 10k
Run 2.5k

But no. Instead, the actual race was:
Swim 300m
Bike 6.8k
Run 2k run

Why?

Dan
