For training, it doesn't really matter. Just get your miles in.
I think most people are responding to your title, which implies what you'd be riding on the day of.

I actually did this on my first brevet bike. Not for performance reasons, but the frame didn't have much tire clearance and the front wheel had a hop, so a 28mm rubbed and squeaked.
I fixed it before too long.
