Where did they come from? Probably a big manufacturer that didn't use them before 10sp came around, and then found their agreement with Shimano is that they couldn't just sell them. How long has it been since these were made? 17 years perhaps? Expiration of patent? My road bike is 16 years old and has 10sp, and 10sp wasn't even new then. So this speculation may fit.
