I rode a lot of miles on the Ventures that came with my 650 wheelset. I agree with that review, rolling resistance is poor. WTB innovated on the 650x47 size quite some years ago, but they've barely changed their compound since then and are one of the slowest available in most tests I've seen. My personal experience, the Ventures felt like mud and I'd get quite a workout on short rides. The pattern does indeed work OK on small crushed gravel - but I can't recommend the tire as anything but a last resort when nothing else can be found

The Specialized Pathfinder Pro 650x47 is a favorite of many here, seems equally knobby on the edges though the solid center rib really helps on pavement. These seem to be in stock at the usual vendors
GKSK would indeed probably work well for the conditions you describe
I'm sure someone will recommend a Rene Herse model shortly...
