Most tax codes have a "garage sale clause" which exempts private transactions under some certain amount. You just have to dig a bit to find it.
I agree, though, it is an huge pain and makes it feel as though it's not worth it. I am unhappy about it too. I'm now equipped to receive bitcoins, thanks to a techy friend (even though that is horrible for the environment and makes me feel like the world is ending)..
