A Roubaix can replace a Tricross if you don't need tires wider than 28mm (just my guess at what the max clearance is). A Roubaix can augment a Tricross if you want a separate dedicated road bike and a dedicated off road bike.

If you're taking about aluminum Roubaixs then it's probably before 2008/9 because that's around when they became made in carbon. Earlier years had different aluminum and carbon models. The older Roubaix frames probably don't have as much tire clearance as modern versions.
