Definately buy from your local bike shop (LBS) and not from a department store. Trek's hardtails are good beginner bikes, perhaps you'd like to take a look at the Specialized Hardrock Sport, I'm sure you could get '05s for even cheaper than 300 (I think they retail for 350 dollars over in the USA).
