After winning the Tour, Floyd Landis commented on his upbringing:

"The way I grew up was a bit more simple than the way I live now. I don't pretend to know a lot about what's going on in life most of the time. But I had good parents who taught me that hard work and patience were some of the most important things in getting what you wanted. It took me a long time in my life to learn patience. But that and persistence, I think, is the lesson that even I learned from this race."

Alluding to doping in cycling, he added, "I think it's up to every child's parents to explain to them while they're watching the race what the best decisions in life are about. That's the way my parents raised me, and I think that's not a bad way to do it."
