The Greatest Common Factor

Here's a question for you folks. Is there a reason for using the greatest common factor in chainring to cog ratios? What I mean is this:

I have a 1-piece crank with the chainring at 52T. I could run a 20T and achieve a similar ratio to that of a 47T/18T combination.

Someone please enlighten me, thank you.
