Can't help you with the spindle selection I'm afraid, but I can tell you that NOT all square tapers are the same. There are at least four kinds:

* Campagnolo taper
* JIS taper - any square-taper BB made today other than Campy (Shimano, Sugino, Sanshin, Sakae, Truvativ, everyone else and their mom)
* Ofmega taper (not compatible with anything other than Ofmega cranks + BBs )
* weird old French taper (sorry, I don't know much else about it, but some French bikes use a normal JIS taper)

Here's an informative thread about using Campy BBs with JIS cranks and vice versa: http://groups.google.com/group/rec.b...c08716cbc6917e
Basically Sheldon Brown and Jobst Brandt (the experts) argue that, although it's not a perfect fit, the two can generally be mixed and matched safely, while some other people (not experts) share horror stories of mismatched cranks and BBs which cracked or wobbled loose
