Ah, the descent. The first part from Red Box is steep and fast with sharp turns. Sounds fun until you see the cracks, holes, and stutter bumps. The worst section of the whole century. Then after Clear Creek is the 9 miles of smooth descending at 35-40 mph. The crazy part is the traffic, not a lot of cars but who wants a car there at that speed on those twisty turns? Some of the other cyclists are all over the road and can push you into oncoming traffic when you try to pass them. The turns are exciting, too, like being banked over at 40 into a blind corner. If you aren't on your toes, you should slow down a bit, but my dumb a$$ was chasing Sarah and the group she was racing. It was thrilling at the time, but looking back I get a strange feeling that I shouldn't push it there. Like M.E. says, I hate that descent.
Hey John, sorry I misread your first post. So, you DID descend down that death hwy hmmm? Only kidding. AC scares me more because the cars have been so aggressive with me on the copious times I've descended it. That day that I bailed halfway up (the 104 degree in the shade day that you, Bob, Stan and a bunch of others rode 86 miles), I had two cars come so close to me that I'm just lucky their rearview mirrors didn't graze me. And I was over as far as I could get without hitting the mountain! But you describe it perfectly. Chasing Sarah, huh? That chick has no fear, I tell you. Glad you had a great ride!
