Mtb clipless pedals use recesed cleats, this means the clipless mechanism needs to stick up above the platform. If the platform was level or above the mechanism the shoe tread would hit it before the cleat reached the mechanism.
Mtb pedals with platforms are more to provide more area with clipless shoes when you are not cliped in.
If you are set on the combined pedals times and egg beaters are susposed to be better with normal shoes than spds but I have only tried the spd version.
