Cold-Weather Racing....tips?

OK guys, now as if I wasn't already uptight enough about my first road race ever this Saturday, (uptight yes, but much more excited and full of anticipation than anything else) the weatherman throws in a wild card.

The forecast for Saturday morning is now terrible:
A few sprinkles possible, with perhaps flurries mixed in in the morning, a high of only 45! Not sure on wind yet.

If I were to do a training ride in these conditions I would be wearing winter wind pants, full-finger gloves and a balaclava. But in a race situation, better to go a little lighter? I mean, I'd rather wear bibs and leg warmers, but I don't want to freeze either. Balaclava nice and warm, but kind of limits hearing and visability just a tad. I'll go with the usual on top--long-sleeved base layer, long-sleeved jersey and a wind vest over the whole thing.

Just did a race in the rain, about 45° and windy. I probably wore slightly less than I would have for a training ride. I think you will warm up more than a training ride. I would suggest keeping hands, feet, and chest warm as possible. Good luck!

booties, knee warmers, arm warmers, baselayer, jersey, windvest, scullcap, and most importantly, GLOVES! that's what I'd wear anyway.

This is about spot on. I might skip the vest, but living in a cold climate im acclimated. I'd probably end up pulling the arm warmers after a few laps. Would rather miss a little on the light side, especially on the legs, overheat there and you will shut down.
