I'm going to give full-on indoor training a go during the week for a while. Got zwift set up, got some workouts programmed, got some random races to jump in, etc.

I'll get outside on the weekends and holidays and then just kill some ftp stuff as much as possible during the week. Going for max time-efficiency. Hope it works decently well.

Raced cross on satuday and had fun in the mud. No results (didn't finish either of the races i started due to mechanicals). But I got to play with my new camera and got a couple of good shots. You know you've made it big time when someone sets your photo as their profile pic on FB.

Sunday morning I got up and hiked up to the top of the local ski hill (from ~6500 ft to ~9000ft) and attempted to ski back down. The resort isn't open yet and the snow makers are going full on so the snow was utter ****. Wouldn't call it ksiing, but I made it all the way back to the base on my skis after a few crashes. Worth it, but the snow was terrible.

On the way driving home after that, body started to feel cold and I felt terrible by the time I got home. Was running about a 100 degree fever so I bummed out on the couch all day and took some ibuprofen and tylenol until the fever broke. Today at work wasn't great and my throat is still sore but I'm holding off on any training until I get over this. A few people at the office have told me they've felt sick and I want to get over this quick!

Went to Vegas and rode the famous Red Rock area. The Casino smoke trashed my lungs, so I was struggling to breathe even under 200 watts. Still a beautiful ride, and freshly paved! pics here (need to find a new web host)

My power has been way down, the biggest factor being my asthma. Went through 1 inhaler in 2 weeks, and even when it does clear up my body just doesn't feel right; I get these tingles in my hands and the muscles always feel depleted. My training has been solid, but I just can't breathe.

Hopefully this clears up because I'm not even capable to do a no drop group ride....it should, I've been around a lot of irritants / triggers recently.

Yesterday i did one BIG BOY workout...three set of 3/1 95%/120% realized by 3rd set it was impossible to hold 120% but still a great workout. Also this type of workout needs a long straight road because u-turns kill the momentum.

That's a nice ride and a surprising amount of elevation gain. At least it was for me.

I also just started a zwift routine this week and I'm finding it hard as I'm more suited to the peaky on/off nature of riding on the street particularly in groups. By contrast I'm struggling to keep the power on without the micro-rests you get on the road and so my average power is actually slightly down vs actual road rides. Will I benefit from this or should I try to make my indoor training more reflective of what I do on the road?

Here are 2 rides that happen to be the same duration; a climb and descent on top and then 5x5 on the trainer below. I had higher avg watts on the road and the ride felt easier than the intervals.

Trainer power is typically a little lower for most people. Be sure you are cooling enough. Fans, etc..., else your body core temp will hit and plateau and then no more power.

I think it's likely that you might be more a surge/sprint type of rider (higher ap on the road ride vs. trainer) which means you're exactly the person to benefit from sucking it up through steady intervals on the trainer to increase threshold. Increased threshold will translate to faster (less need for) recovery from on-the-road accelerations and make you even stronger there.

It doesn't look it since the hills have that tabletop profile where it looks flat but you're actually at 5%.

Saddle sores today, first time in 15 years of cycling. I may run or do the elliptical at the gym; something to burn calories.

To add on to what Fudgy said, this might be very beneficial to you.

Aerobically you're probably pretty weak and this can be a good opportunity to work on that. I was the same way because I only worked on what I was already good at, short, 1-5 min stuff. I could just barely hang on to a break if it had enough people, but would just die a hundred deaths the whole time. Finally I started working a whole lot more on threshold and steady/tempo stuff and it made a tremendous difference on being able to ride fast for a long time.

Just something you have to do to get better at. It'll definitely come if you stick with it, though.

I was on the fence about the two, both were about 20 miles from the casino I was staying at and the Red Rock one seemed more like a must do than the trail.

I'd probably agree if I could only do one - the two times I've been to Vegas I rode both.

Today was supposed to be the start of 2018 Base for me, but instead I did some sketchy masters ride with @Ygduf, pretty much the opposite of zone 2.

For March it would be decent training, but it’s not the right thing in November, at least not for me.

I made the “break,” which was really just the decently fit guys riding away from everyone else. Sure, it was hard, but not really great training.

All that said it was nice to see Fudgy and enjoy some sunshine! 2018 has begun.

Not feeling sick anymore, just a nasty sore throat that won't go away. Throwing everything I know at it to try and kick it before thanksgiving. It makes swallowing not fun at all. I managed 60 minutes on the trainer really easy but it hurt to gulp air even, so I'm worried this might be something like strep. Hoping not, but...

Thats the problem when the low FTP guys show up for a ride. It happens to me all the time. I complain a lot that the ride is too hard.

I think it's just tradition. @mattm and I are both natural complainers. I go to his organized team ride and want steady and they sprint for random signs so I *****. He shows up to my usual fun-for-me group ride and complains that it's bad training for November.

Luckily we both show up and do well in races. Many paths to the same place and all that.

Sickness moved after a bad night of sleep. Sore throat is better, still there, but better. Now my eyes are super gummy and are clouding over my vision. Feels like allergies. Gonna take some benadryl after I get back to Seattle which should knock me down for about 10 hours and let me actually sleep. I rode for all of 30 minutes today...

Had planned to ride with some buddies back home tomorrow morning but with as ****ty as I feel, that's probably not gonna a happen.

Two hours of z2 last two days, feeling good. Something that (at least for me) can only be done solo; keep power in the z2 range, no coasting, with a VI ending up 1.05 or less.
