MENTION=351576]Heathpack[/MENTION] Nice pics but you are right. It is not Tahiti - too many pinecones.

visiting in-laws out of state, so it's spin bike for me. fortunately it's a stages, so good enough, and the one I picked seems to be report pretty well and not too high. saturday was 90mins with 4x15 @ 88% with initial 30sec sprint, yesterday was 5x6min with initial sprint and 5mins @ 95% (ended up doing 3 of the 5 at 100%).

6x3min today. I chose to go with the normal 3min from the plan instead of 2min. Man those suckers hurt if you're honest about picking your power.
It's probably a crap calc, but with them being done at 330w the Powertap rouvy app claimed 40min at 265w NP.
Now I'm hungry. Off for some recovery salad mix......womp womp womp womp.

Last block of the season is done, from here on its easy riding (still going to ride daily) for a few weeks.
Before I start up again I need to get my heart checked. I've felt some soreness and I don't know if that's from training really hard plus my meds (which cause chest pain) or a legit issue. I'm sure its #1 , but its the one part of the body you make sure is okay.
Doctors love seeing me about chest issues. My vitals are like porn to them. Granted my resting heart rate is no longer in the 20's but the mid 30's is still pretty good!

Back at Fiesta...30 minute sprinters warmup and then 20’ low cadence threshold intervals. While at VSC last week, I noted an interval workout posted for Roger’s Session. It was 2’ z1 1’ z2 40” z3 20” z4. Then repeat 1’ z2 40” z3 20” z4. I did 2X(2’ z1 and then 10’ of 1’ z2 40” z3 20” z4) for a total of 28 minutes. Essentially, it was 1 minute on and 1 minute off with an acceleration during the one minute on.
So I have not done 1 minute stuff in a while so I thought it would be a good change of pace. Roger loves the 20 seconds of high power. His take on the Zs is different from Coggan. z3 is race pace and z4 is bridging pace. So when one does these at the track during his session with the fast guys, they are fast and hard and since one is on the banking z2 is not easy due to having to keep up the speed to keep from slipping off the track. I adjusted my power levels accordingly.
Alas, even though I did a race / track workout I was on my TT bike and probably looked like a total dweeb / dork. I just learned that the other day. To add additional humiliation, I stopped on the back stretch of Fiesta to eat a gel and recalibrate my power meter and a hot triathlon chick goes by and asks if I need any help. I said no but if I would have been on the top of my game, I would have said yes and quickly let the air out of tire and she could have showed me how to use a CO2 inflator.

This is the first week in maybe a month that I've done all my scheduled workouts. Rare for me to ever skip workouts, its been a time of big work stress. Then last weekend I get an email that the $ was finally approved to get me a new MRI and suddenly getting out of bed in the morning is much easier.
Anyway. Yesterday was a couple of 5 min 115% intervals, then 10 min at threshold and 30 min at tempo, on the TT bike in aero position. Was a little surprised I got it done, since I changed to a more aggressive TT position after aerotesting two and a half months ago and then kind of stopped riding the TT bike much. Today was some big gear work on the TT bike in aero.
Also finally decided to bag the idea of the mtb fondo in Big Bear on Sept 29. Thinking about it, riding with a ton of people on the course, with other riders breathing down my back, lots of dust, etc- sounds like a really good way to ruin what could be a great mtb ride. So instead, I'm heading to Big Bear that weekend but will just ride an epic mtb route the day after the fondo, Sept 30. Then Oct 1 will start TT season for me, back to business.
I might race a local 20K TT in Sept, just to get back into the swing of things. Low expectations since it feels like I haven't been on the TT bike very much of late. Although Strava tells me I'm closing in 7500 miles on the TT bike. I kind of have that end-of-summer feeling you had when you were a kid and heading back to school. I'll be a little sad to cut back on the mountain biking but I think its most enjoyable as a counterpoint to TTing.
Something of a relief to have come to some schedule conclusions, picking races etc. Now its just time to start getting the work done.

Zwift race monday then promptly got sick Tuesday morning before going to work. Full on food poisoning and about 15 hours of sleep all day tuesday. I'm just now feeling like I can stomach food again after a day at work. Only did about 30 minutes on the trainer today.. Not like I could do much more than that.Quick Reply
Plus side is I was 5lb lighter this morning. That'll be good prep for lotoja, right?

Last night was supposed to be a solid 50ish mile gravel grind. Freaking tired of idiot maintenance issues on the cyclocross bike.
I didn't reassemble it correct after the France trip, headset little ring that goes on the fork tube thing was in the wrong spot. Ohhhhhh, that's why the bike steers like a freaking truck with shot to hell steering knuckles and blown shocks.
Instead, it was just 15 miles of pretty much nothing in pouring pelting rain with a 15min pit stop to try to fix the headset.
Then got home and sat on the bench outside to get attacked by fire ants, little ********.
I did find out though that this tire is quite a bit faster than the old ridiculous huge knobs that were on there when I bought the thing.

Under/overs for 3x9min. I went to go check back to last year's data. Same training bike from the gym at work, 70 watts higher for the same workout on almost the same date from 2017 to 2018.
I don't think anywhere close to that is possible for 2018 to 2019, but maybe a 1/3 would be stellar even.

Fitness is coming back little by little. But not enough to race Winters. Cantelow is hard enough for me to get over when I have good fitness.

Mr. H rewaxed my chain yesterday and I had to look down repeatedly on the Friday Coffee Ride to make sure he'd replaced it. Ahh, no chain days. So sweet.
Spent 30 min powerwise at or above threshold but only 10 min with Z4+ heart rate. Felt great.
Maybe its all that mountain biking.

I lost a KoM I liked, so I've been trying to take it back. previous pr was 1:04, new time to beat is 1:03, I've done 1:04, 1:04, 1:05, 1:05, 1:05... damn. New all-time 1min power numbers though. Really 40-70s power numbers.

Negative ... Coffee Republic starts about a mile from home. Hard to pass it up.
That's about the only time duration that I can compete in for KOMs. Until Zimny catches wind of the segment, then he steals it.

@wktmeow @TMonk @Ygduf @Heathpack @mattm @caloso @furiousferret and others. As you may know, the rules for access to Camp Pendleton will be changing. To ride ones bike on the base will require a special picture ID issued by the marine base that must be renewed annually. Yesterday, I went through the process of getting the ID. It took about 45 minutes and was pretty smooth similar to going to the DMV for a drivers license. There is no charge for the ID.
I was dressed in cycling clothes and when my number was called, the woman at the window asked me if I was there for a bowling pass. I guess my jersey was too loose fitting for her tastes.
She was trying to be cute.
Yesterday AM was a 2 hour tempo ride through the camp and state park with 3x90" z6 intervals sprinkled in. Thursday was threshold intervals on Mount Soledad.

Missed the past 2 days of riding and the prior 2 days were pretty low quality, got in another stages spin ride, 50sec at 130%, 40 rest. 0.97IF for the hour. One week until my Cx race, probably in as good of shape as I can be for that

I've been too busy to visit here much lately. My "retirement job" is a part-time gig at a bike shop, which turned into full-time last month when the mechanic quit. That's on top of the 15-18 hours/week I've been riding, topped out at 110 CTL/146ATL about four weeks ago. Last week (13-17 August) I was in Colorado Springs for a climbing/altitude camp. You can tell your coach is a hardass when she assigns you this for a bleepin' training ride:

All this is in preparation for LOTOJA, which is two weeks from today. I'm ramping down this week (730 TSS) and next (670-700) and then tapering the week of the ride. It's the hardest I've ever worked to prep for an event. I'm really looking forward to it!

@Hermes - I'm doing the sportive rather than the race, I didn't want my first 200+ mile ride at 6-7000 ft to be a race for this sea-level flatlander.

Great mtb ride for me yesterday. 16 miles/2400 ft of climbing, 100% HR zones 2/3, much improved technically, such a beautiful trail, great company on the 9 mile climb with plenty of time to chat.
Also: I have a conference in St George UT in Sept, bringing a bike and riding there. Then after we were planning on Zion NP but instead we’re bringing the dog on the trip and going to Moab instead. Three of the women mtb instructors from my Trek Dirt Series camp in Mammoth are based out of Moab and all three were great. Hopefully I can set up a few hours of instructional riding with one of them. And see Arches and Canyonlands. And keep riding in the second half of our trip.
Hitting up another favorite trail today.
At Mount Pinos, yesterdays ride:

@Hermes, I’ve only ridden through Camp Pendleton a few times, back in my double century riding days. I had heard they were going to change access rules which makes sense to me. But it’s a pretty big hassle for LA people, you’d have to drive down there first, before your ride. I guess maybe I could do it on the way home from Fiesta some time, but my guess is they aren’t working on Sundays.

@Heathpack It is a hassle for others who are not local and live south of the camp. There are many group rides that originate in orange county and go south through the camp.
Check the website for days that the visitors center is open. When I was there, a small group of cyclists arrived and went through the process. Nothing in the process took a lot of time but one had to check in and get a number. Then wait for that number to be called. There were other non cycling people there as well getting their access badges and registering vehicles and etc. Once the number is called, one has to present the printout from the earlier web registration. The person at the window scans the printout. Then one is finger printed and a picture is taken. One has to wait for a few minutes while the picture ID is processed and name called. You are then given the ID and good to go.

Good luck, @revchuck! It should be interesting, given the altitude. Also: 8700 ft of climbing. Good luck. Enjoy (?) it.
