When I was first asked if I was interested in joining a team, I was excited by the prospect of having teammates to work with. I figured I'd be expected to enter a certain number of races, provide a certain amount of support (assist with race sign-in, marshalling, etc.), which we are, and that's stuff I'll be happy to do. The potential commitment I was worried about making was weekday team training rides that might take place too late in the morning or too early in the evening, but it turns out, there probably won't be any, and the only time we may even see our fellow teammates would be on race day. But God forbid one of them should encounter me out of uniform on a bike! That's what's disappointing.
I'm pretty sure he'll just tell me to go with it, see how it goes - I can't be too picky.
EDIT: By the way, when I did "do for my country," uniforms had to be correct, well-maintained, and complete, but when not on duty, we were generally expected to wear civilian clothes, i.e., no recognizable uniform item. I don't get how being on any bike at any time constitutes being "on duty" for a race team.

If you think you're going to run into teammates while riding, wear the kit.
if not, wear what you want. Don't overthink things. If you're a nervous hand wringer just wear neutral kit.
also $300 for the kits bottles helmet is not bad at all

Importantly, the idea that cat 5s are going to work together is a complete idealization of the sport. It just doesn't happen.

Also the reality is that pretty much all teams are scrabbled together with masking tape and hope. Acquiring and keeping sponsors requires constant work. It also requires the shared delusion that sponsors get some value in return for their sponsorship. Promising sponsors that all team members will wear their kits whenever on the bike is just doing our part. If we stop clapping, Tinkerbell will die.

Around here, there are a number of regular training rides, and it's pretty regular to see 5+ of our team on any given one of them. It's nice to see us out in force.
Also, yeah. You're Cat 5 (what does 'experienced' mean?). Expecting other Cat 5s to work together is herding cats. Maybe you can get it to work. That'd be cool. But that wouldn't be the reason to join a team. Get to Cat 4 and start thinking about team tactics, maybe. At Cat 5, I think you're just hoping your team tactics are good enough that they don't *chase* you down if you go in a break. That's about as much as you can ask for.

add this to your off-day training kit and no one will ever know you're out of uniform.

Funny thing about this team - it seems like it's the sponsor's own idea. There was nothing about it in the preliminary description of the arrangement, but from what I've seen, they're heavily into "social media engagement," too. Hope the final version doesn't say we have to meet a post quota.
Finally, by having teammates to work with, I wasn't so much thinking of race tactics and such - it was more about shared expectations of performance and improvement. Without any teammates, it's too easy to skip training rides, or drop out of a race and go home.

Tell them you will take cool instagram photos of you in your kit with an esspresso in your hand and post it all around the Twit-face-insta-verse. That should qualify as "social media engagement".
I think the whole "Wear team kits all the time" should be reserved for teams that provide like 4 kits for free. I run a team and I even tell people to wear their kits at big rides or races but that they should feel free to train in whatever the hell they want.

context is kind of important. Again assuming I know the team, the entire mission is to keep the founders memory alive. The team is sponsored by his family for that sole purpose and to promote the sport in his memory. To that end the only benefit they receive is name recognition. Since we're talking a local cycling club there's not much more than seeing the jersey on the road, or social media. It's also good to keep in mind that such things are really just guidelines. No one is going to make you post on facebook. In fact the elite guys are mostly not on social media at all. Likewise no one is really going to say anything if on a winter day you're wearing a pair of tights or you're wearing something non branded at some point (all my stuff is in the wash). More than anything such things stand as guidelines, which are nice to follow but no one really expects you to buy 5 kits in your first year. Importantly you're going to get the same spiel with most any CRCA team. Hey, we kicked a guy off because he raced in another kit.
