giro d'italia crash

i just read this. the photo's pretty bad.

"After hospital scans in Cetraro failed to reveal fractures to his skull or spine, the latest statement by the race organisers' medical service said Lopez de Munain has mainly rib fractures on his left side and suspected fractures of his collarbone."

ouch. after watching sunday's action, i was totally surprised that there weren't a few then, too. man, those guys ride in tight formations (if you watched closely, there was some shoving for a bit, too).

The coverage on cyclingnews made it sound bad, but that he was moving alright after a few minutes. Scary stuff. Reminds me a bit of Casartelli, though that was going down a mountain at much higher speed.

Wow. My head hurts just looking at the guy. Poor guy. I hope he heals... well, regular-like. It looks like an awkward and painful fall.

I have watched that about five times on RAITRE and EuroSport (of course they are the same feed, from a chopper, and from behind) , and still do not see him hitting any other wheel. I wonder if he didn't just catch the edge of the asphalt - they were [very close to it - and fall. Very nasty looking, and very awkward hit on the rail as well.

And this from Cyclingnews this afternoon:

" Alberto Lopez de Munain was diagnosed with a hydropneumothorax caused by nine broken ribs, a broken left collar bone, a broken shoulder blade, damage to the left shoulder as well as grazes and cuts to his back, knees and face."
