My hat is off to the workers who troubleshoot and fix downed power lines and other issues in very difficult weather and working conditions.

The next couple of days will be cleanup with cycling on the roads sketchy at best with all the debris, dirt and sand.

Indoor workout today.
So, did you pull out the surfboard?

I did not even see the waves but I have seen wave action like that in Hawaii. No board surfing for me. I have body surfed and boogie boarded in 8 to 10 feet. 35 seems just too high. Also, with that much wind, it would be impossible to get out past breaking surf.

Our older dog is almost 16. She has a huge fatty growth on her side that’s the size of a basketball. When it started to form when she was 12 the vet said she was too old to risk surgery and she’d no way live long enough to turn into much. She’s a forking rock star.

It snowed here yesterday but I was so busy working I didn't see it. I feel like that girl in the Ray Bradbury story who was locked in the closet the only time it stopped raining in 7 years.

I got washed out to sea during a storm when I was a kid while boogie boarding in Santa Cruz. I think I was 11? The current just took me out like nothing and suddenly I was a mile or 2 out to sea. My friends saw me so I knew someone was coming. Waves weren't too choppy but I was worried about sharks the whole time. After 2 hours I got picked up by the Coast Guard.

We're getting some of that gnarly weather up here. Last night it was a freeze so I had to get the Xmas lights back out to put on the citrus trees. Bit of a lull right now, but we're supposed to get heavy rain and 30+mph wind tonight. At least we should finally have some decent snow in the Sierras.

I came to a realization today that maybe I ought to try and get the vaccine now. I was thinking I’d be in general public but my job is with a health agency, which I suppose technically qualifies me as working in health care, it’s just that I work on regulatory stuff and not in the delivery of care. But the definitions are pretty hazy and so I think I can get by with my work ID, we’ll see I guess!

One more reason I'm sad they made me return my MGH ID when I left Boston. I'm only a PhD, but waving around a badge that says Dr. himespau with the Mass General logo on it might have gotten me bumped up in line. As it is, even though I teach 200 students, I'm toward the back of the line because they're college and not K-12.

MIL has cancer and has been staying with us as she goes through chemo. Supposed to have her first vaccine shot last Friday, but the powers that be ran out the night before she was scheduled to receive it. Unsure of when we'll have another window given the weirdness around availability and planning it around chemo.

It kinda seems like the whole system is so broken at the moment that if you are able to get the vaccine you should go for it. Supply is so weird, in some areas not all vaccines are being distributed due to weird bottlenecks (NYC?), in others it seems like first come first serve (HV up where I am?)

My parents got their first dose last week. Had to drive to another county, which was supposedly just for that county's residents, but they had more vaccine than they could use, so they were just giving it to anyone who had an appointment. Nothing in the sign up checked or asked, and when there they asked for your address but didn't turn you away even if you were truthful. Hopefully the same rules apply in a few weeks. They're over 65 so should probably qualify in most places for early anyway.

Hopefully distribution gets much more efficient soon.

I'm pretty sure it was the other way around. Someone cut me off while warming up and chopped my wheel. I lined up with my knee bleeding lol.

I still have two of my older ones but they don't say anything fun like Dr. on them.

You mean had an expected immune reaction? Yeah. It can be pretty rough. I got a fever, chills, and shakes after the 2nd shot. Pretty sure I had a take two a week later which felt the same but it doesn't make sense to be an immune reaction since it's too long. Felt exactly the same though. Totally wild and glad to be over it now. Hope the new variants are covered.

I had a student who wrote me this week and said she'd gotten her second shot the night before and was feeling what you described and thought it was probably best that she didn't come to class and get other people sick. This was for a pre-nursing microbiology lab, so I felt a bit like I'd failed in my teaching of the immune response, but then I thought maybe she'd taken one of the versions taught by a different professor and then I didn't feel so bad.

Edit:I mean if she felt like crap and wasn't able to safely work in the lab because of the shakes or fever or whatever or needed to recover from her symptoms, sure, but the whole, "I don't want to get other people sick with what I got from this vaccine" part was what threw me as someone teaching future nurses about how diseases, the immune system, and vaccines work.

Wife's aunt is a nurse in Maui. Straight up was spreading the "don't take it, they're giving you animal dna" bit and also was spreading around the "reinfection of yourself over and over by wearing a mask" Judy Mikovitz bull crap all over Facebook. Actually had it pulled down by Facebook then started private messaging people the stuff.

I chalk it up to figuring out how to execute tasks to get what's necessary to pull a paycheck. We've got engineers at work sometimes say stuff (technical stuff) that just defies the basic principles of physics, 1st or 2nd law of thermodynamics, or logic altogether.

One argument I used to get into all the time was about heat exchangers. A heat exchanger can do more work on the fluid passing through it the larger it is. A heat exchanger can do more work the more energy you either pass through it or pull out of it (cold vs. hot media sent to the exchanger). I always had people want to "improve" things by slowing down the flow of the fluid you want to heat or cool through the exchanger. This does make that fluid either hotter or colder coming out of the exchanger. However, flow rate (the per second or per minute) part of the equation seemed to escape them. A fluid coming out at 150 deg F and only 50kg/min is likely a lot less energy content than a fluid coming out at 140deg F but 100kg/min. Then the downstream process wouldn't have the capacity it needed due to their "improvement".

Well, my arm is sore this AM mostly when I do a lateral raise. Same for my wife. And since I have food allergies, I had to hang out for 30 minutes versus 15 minutes at the vaccination site - no problem. And I moved my arm a lot while I was hanging out. My arm is much more sore than when I get a flu shot. Slept great and feel great.

The second shot is what it is. It will be like the last 10k of a 40k time trial. I will suffer through it like everyone else. I will be glad when it is over and I will be glad that I did it.

How does it compare to the tetanus shot? For me that's the worst one (I feel like a horse kicked me in the shoulder for a few days after that one), though I've heard that the shingles one is pretty awful.
