Yup. When I saw this this morning on my phone I tried to respond with quote, but I got the popup. Apparently BF has its own special virus.

I've switched to free Adblocker browser on my phone the last month or so, and it's eliminated that issue I think. It isn't perfect, but it's much better.

I browse mostly on my phone. It's been intermittently doing that for months now, usually an annoying pop-up that makes my Samsung vibrate, and I can only get rid of it by closing the browser. But it happens maybe once a week.

Probably buying a house finally. Been looking for about 4 months or so, seen a ridiculous amount of houses. This one has a great private backyard, a nice heated pool, enough space, just missing a basement basically, but you can't win them all.

We were there for the inspection this morning and a big group ride came flying by the front of the house.

A good omen I think.

There is no doubt Sam is a great bike racer, probably much better than I will ever be, but that does not give him carte blanche to throw personal insults or act the way he has in the past or the way he acted in that race.
Even as a fan for me that's not acceptable. It's okay to be competitive in a race but not to the point of throwing insults at someone else. Those that race with me know that I'm competitive when it comes to crunch times but at the same time I pretty much never yell at other riders (I will yell "up!" and such). If I yell at someone it's a big deal.

I'm not good enough to race against him directly (if I'm in a race he would be in I'm thinking about making it another lap) so I've never experienced/seen him act that way.

I've seen it happen! I saw you tear into a teammate for, I think, being happy about finishing 12th. That doesn't quite sound right but it was something like that.

I meant no commentary on the dude who crashed because he thought he'd won a sprint. I've never been in position to crash like that. I'm sure he's slapping himself on the back of the head as much as anyone.

I take it back. Watched a video of this thing from a few years back -- guess that for every rider there is a derby. looks like 22-ish rider/derny pairs might not be out of the question.

haha yes. I'm pretty sure he got inside the top 20, whatever the place. "I think he still doesn't get it" (another now-former teammate but still friend's words, a direct quote). A few riders that left the team a couple years ago cited him as one of the main reasons for leaving. Blissfully unaware of every other rider on his team, he'll carefully launch an attack, even if shortly before a teammate just launched, effectively chasing his own teammate down. And then he'll come to me after the race and proudly tell me how he made a huge attack during the race ("but I got chased down"). Well of course you did, because you were the rider dragging the field to our rider off the front.

I forget the circumstances of that particular incident but I definitely laid into him for not racing smarter.

Just to make things clear I'm all for a teammate riding for themselves. At the Cat 3-4 level it's no big deal if someone doesn't want to work with the team. Not ideal or what I want but it's okay. A smart rider riding for themselves can still be an asset to the team due to standard tactical stuff. Just don't negate the team's efforts.

I did lay into a rider I don't know in a Masters race, 2015 I think. That was the last time I really laid into someone for a long time, I honestly don't remember when I did such a thing before that. Screamed at him, a number of times. He was repeatedly elbowing and pushing one of the few women in the race, in situations that definitely didn't call for it, and he didn't do it to the men around him, just her, pushing and shoving to claim 20th spot in the field from her. It was bizarre, like he was picking on her specifically. Other than a few "Hey, what the hell?!" she didn't say boo to him, so I stepped in and asked him why he was riding like that.

After the race a few people asked me what happened because they could hear me from the sidelines. Another racer said that he quit racing for a few years because of this guy, that this guy always did such things (first time I'd seen it myself). I even contacted his team "director" (a rider I've known for decades). The team director/leader pshawed it off as "it was just a racing incident" (which made me lose a dramatic amount of respect for the guy). It was one of the two races that year where I was told to remove my camera before the start. Therefore there was no evidence of his shenanigans.

I've talked to more than a few riders about not swerving hard etc, usually in my own races. But those are quiet enough that riders nearby probably won't be able to understand what I'm saying. I'll also say things in the Tuesday Night races, but at some level, certain years, the promoter expected me to offer some advice.

I did back to back masters races this weekend for the first time since... I think Bethel in spring 2015. Won the field sprint in the 45+ and immediately circled back (not even time for a cooldown lap) to line up for the 35+. For the first 10-15 minutes of the 2nd race I was still gasping from the sprint, sitting 30 riders back and wow it was a terrible experience back there. Masters races can be really weird, a hard 1/2 race at the front and a bunch of cat 4s barely hanging on to the back. There's a particular cyclist body language that just screams "keep away from me," knees and elbows sticking out, you know the look. Whatever the opposite of souplesse is. I don't mean to be snobby, everyone was a cat 4 once and plenty of cat 4s are awesome, but there is a particular type of masters cat 4 that isn't fun to be around.

Leaving my rest stop yesterday evening I was going slow enough to notice a tail light laying on the side of the road that someone had run over with their car. I'm a borderline aficionado after destroying so many and this one was impressive in death. As a light I have no doubt it sucked; lacking in accurate dispersion, possessed of somnambulist flash patterns, quite obviously a poor mount design, gimmicky 1/10 watt flashing bulbs on rear of light, etc and so on.

Why I stopped was the build quality is insane. I've never seen one absorb enough force to describe a parallelogram and still function. Going up to the shop to have them ship it back with a note detailing why their trash is being sent back for a rethink. In case you can't tell. It bothers me to see this high of production standards fettered away. How do you manage to make the unthinkably rare something well built in this day and age yet screw up the only part numerous others gets right?

Picture fails to show just how three dimensionally twisted it really is.

Picture didn't load (or at least for me) but I really want to see this masterpiece of engineering (if not design, or function, or usefulness).

Try this. Most lights would have been in many tiny pieces.

Had a good scare about 10 minutes ago. Family member calls and asks me if I've heard anything about the manhunt in my neighborhood, roughly. They suggested I go look on the internet and call them back when I had no idea what they were talking about. Time to move.

Is it the World Tour or Cat 4?

Took this photo last week in Marseille. Aside from the rider's kit, this has all the makings of a Cat 4 race: guy in a chair facing the wrong direction, spectator in the back yawning, multiple spectators focused on anything other than the rider, and one person clapping.

Made me smile.

There's a few guys like that I see in races (seeing as I've pretty much only done the Tuesday Night B races for a couple years, except this year's M50 state champs). Cornering weird, upper body way too rigid, jerking the bike around, totally not relaxed on the bike. I've been trying to analyze what it is that makes them look so non-fluent, and I think it has to do with steering with the hips or not. Those that turn bars look pretty sketchy, those that steer with hips don't. But that's not a complete answer because it's more than that.

How are so many people so bad at their jobs? I really don't understand. I don't think I have that high of standards, am I maybe expecting too much from the average person?

This home inspection we just got is atrocious. He doesn't know the difference between "there" and "their" for one thing. Nothing is labeled, the layout makes no sense, pictures are strewn about without any text to describe them or any relevant paragraph nearby. About 10% of the sentences you have to read 3 times to figure out what he meant.

If I wrote a report like that at work I'd expect to get a talking to for sure, especially if I actually sent it out the door in that condition. But somehow he comes highly rated on Angie's List.
