There is not hand-wrenching or planning. His "planning" was digging himself into a hole...a real one - this is last Friday.

Actually it might be a better way to do it without the crowds. It is a RR and solo of course would not be the same. Duties leading up to this have shot any real opportunity. A Sunday ride if he can't get off Sat may work out.

Theoretically, let's say someone went to leave for Canada passport in hand. Only to discover it expires 1 day after they are coming back to the US. Panicked call to government helpline assures them of no problems as long as they present said passport at border crossing on day before expiration. How high do you rate their chances of getting back from vacation?
There are much, much worse places to be stuck than Canada. Like most of the US for example.

Pretty high, given that you don't need a passport to go to Canada.

About 25 years ago! If it's no longer the case, well, everything was better in the olden days.

Actually a passport, NEXUS pre-approval card, passport card, or enhanced license is required. Those under 18 need to be accompanied by the parent and have a birth certificate/SS card.

Long story short is ID theft, smuggling, terror concerns, etc have really upped the security process and presence along our Northern border. If Doge has taken his Empire Builder Amtrak route he can affirm the train stops in ND to be searched and make everyone on board produce their travel documents.

Used to be some enterprising person would commit the heinous crime of hauling a small sled full of cigarettes across the border behind their snowmobile to make $1K US. The olden days were better.

Posted a technical question in Road Cycling sub forum.
That was a mistake. The ratio of useful advise to presumptuous posts was quite low.

I had more issues at Canadian customs than most countries. I had to tell them why the job I was doing could not be done by a Canadian.

Ratio of useful advice to presumptive posts. Y's body composition thread was what I was referring to.

I myself haven't crossed the Canadian border in many years. Even in the case nobody else had timely up to date advice it didn't hurt to ask. I should know any moment whether this person got into Canada successfully. Getting back into the US next week always seemed the riskier proposal.

I don't want to bring politics into it, but I am incredibly pissed off that I live in a state that finds enhanced drivers licenses such an anathema because it is an assault on an individual's personal freedoms that I might soon need a passport to fly internally in the United States. I moved from Michigan to Boston by driving through Canada in the middle of the night in a massive snowstorm in the olden days (in a 27 foot truck) and when stopped at the border into Canada, I told them I had houseplants and aquarium plants in the back, but it was padlocked shut and the padlock would remain shut until I crossed back into the US but would be willing to open it if they needed to see and they waved my through after I flashed my driver's license. US Customs at 3 am in Buffalo, NY (I think) had the same response. Life was so much easier back then.

My state is refusing this act of governance as well. They also stood alone and took on big tobacco for a settlement unique to them. Many times in recent history they have correctly refused to accept plea bargains or legal stances that weren't good for their constituents. I don't mean legalizing MJ by going against every federal law outlawing it either. All i can do is wait to see how it plays out.

I can see how having some form of travel document for crossing an international border is relevant. Much beyond that it gets hard to expect people to swallow anything without good reason for being policed.

I raced against (a few times in the same field) the girl that won the Hill climb national champs today in the elite womens category. Goes to school up in Canada but is from Boulder. My family hosted her and her team a few times when they would come down to do the collegiate race in Seattle.

I was excited to see that post on Facebook

Reports were she (the open women winner) was amazing. Some of the guys waiting for the podiums were talking about her. Said she was in front of the guys a long time before they passed her.

Margot is quite the athlete. She was third at hill climb nats last year. The win this year plus some good results at bigger races.

She wasn't allowed to compete at USCA collegiate nationals since she went to school in BC. Her and Heidi (the current club collegiate national champ) had quite a few fun battles to watch up in the Northwest. Unfortunately our women's fields were small so they hopped in with the Men's Bs a lot. They would still tear it up there. Occasionally they would go back to back and hop in for the beginning of Men's A.

I got offered to join a team last night. It's the group I typically ride with on Thursdays. The one I've been frustrated with because they don't know how to run a proper group ride.

I've been mulling it over. Their team director is supposed to send me some info about the team. They seem like a good group of guys and they did well enough at the race last night but I don't know about upward mobility.

With how I have been feeling and racing recently I could forsee myself getting my 2 upgrade about midway through next year if I have a strong and productive off season. And then what? The team doesn't really have many people that race or compete in those fields. It's back to racing solo again.

Which I don't mind. It's nice (in the 3s) to not have to worry about repurcussions of chasing a move for anything beyond yourself.

Stuff to ponder. I know a team is more about the community than the racing. And I know I need to meet more people here....

Due diligence would require investigating how much of what you like there isn't going to change next season, no? Wouldn't hurt to check out as many other teams as you can by the same logic.

I'd answer if riding for another team is going to destroy the good times with them first.

I am at ~ 23000 miles on strava.

The earth's circumference is ~25000 miles.

In the past 1.75 years I've biked 92% of the circumference of the habitable universe.

That's ****ing weird, man.

I'm avoiding work at the moment, by the way.
