I just got a call back about one of the phone interviews I had last week. They want to bring me in for an in person interview next week

topflightpro 09-22-17 08:30 AM

Good luck Wylde.

Speaking of work, the walkway from the parking garage to my building is just long enough that if I reach the building while someone is exiting the garage, if I don't hold the door open for them, I'm kind of a jerk, but at the same time, if I do hold the door, they feel the need to hustle to get there, which also makes me kind of a jerk.

And twice this week, I've had folks in the right turn lane turn left to beat traffic, and both times, they nearly crashed into me as I also turned left - road ends, right lane goes right, left lane goes left. The right lane is marked for right turns, not right or left turns.

I have nephews and a niece and they're over every weekend. Matter of fact, we're taking them camping for the next few days. Its supposed to get to 28 degrees up there, considering just two weeks ago it was in the 100's here I'm not sure if its going to be enjoyable.

I'm in Syracuse for the weekend. Giving a talk at the University tonight, and then leading a workshop all day tomorrow. It is a wee bit surreal.

Oh, and apparently I'm up against Paul McCartney who's playing the Carrier Dome tomorrow night. So there's a day of parties and bands playing all over campus.

Daniel txts me he got a low score on his Physics test but class average was lower (a lot to say there I won't) so he's OK for racing.
I encouraged him that his physics understanding was useful for cycling. He said it was electricity and magnetics, so it didn't matter for cycling.
Kid must not have heard of motors.

What are you speaking on?

NYSBRA proposes an upgrade rule change to USAC:

1E2(g). When categories are combined, the finish place will be determined on a cascading basis according to a rider's category, such that the finish place of a rider is always the raw finish among riders of their same category or lower. For example, in a 3-4-5 combined race, the finishing place of any Cat 3 rider is always the raw finish across the line, the finishing place of a Cat 4 rider is raw finish among Cat 4s and Cat 5s, etc.

My personal longstanding suggestion for simplifying upgrades is to give the winner one point, plus another point for every 10 racers. Then give second place one less point, third place one less than that, etc.

At present there are some very silly break points with field sizes. You get one point for finishing 3rd of 5, or one point for finishing 6th of 150.

When the other coast get swallowed by the ocean might you find justice and correctly sized podiums.

Phone interview with Trek this morning. Seemed like it went well, their recruiter told me he was going to pass my info along to the hiring manager..

Hopefully I get a call to come for in person on this one.

I feel like that's dumb - cat 4's could upgrade by finishing 30th in a 3/4's race?

People that should be upgrading are upgrading; why make it easier?

If you read the article, she makes the case that the current rules disadvantage racers (cat 4 CX women in her example) who can basically never find a big enough field of peers, and always have to race "up" in combined fields.

globecanvas 09-22-17 04:18 PM

But yeah, incentivizing cat 4s to sprint for 30th in a 3/4 race does seem like a pretty bad idea.

Same folks that got a participation trophy.

I like that. I raced recently in a field of 11 that got reported to USAC as 7. I got 2nd. That nets me 2 upgrade points. Had it been reported as a field of 11, I would have 5 upgrade points. The cutoffs are just arbitrary.

Not that I'm chasing points. When it's time for me to move up to my 2, I'll know.

I'm a meditation teacher. I gave a talk on meditation not being an act but taking the entirety of our lives, in particular the aspects of relationship.

Today I give a workshop highlighting various specific practices.

I can tell you the NJ season long point series gives points to 20th. Particularly in bigger events, it creates some very sketchy situations with some folks sprinting for low places chasing points amongst loads of people sitting up because they're out of it.

furiousferret 09-23-17 08:26 PM

Camping trip didn't go well. It dropped to 27 and I probably slept 2 hours tops. When it was still in the 30's by 11 am we just packed it up and went home. Totally planned 2 hours but crashed out right after we got home.

It usually doesn't get cold down here in September, this is the coldest its been in years.

big john 09-23-17 10:30 PM

Don't worry, it's supposed to get back up near 100 next week.

Ttoc6 09-24-17 11:28 AM

There was a start of fall festival food up in Ogden yesterday that I went and walked around at. There was a hot sauce vendor there that had a bunch to sample. Now, I like spicy food. I'm no connoisseur, but I appreciate a good hot sauce. I tried two that just melted my face off. One called the unholy trinity. It was your standard, ghost, Carolina ripper and scorpion pepper sauce. Really good, but beyond what I would use everyday for eating.

Now the Second was called mad dog 357 gold label, which had straight capsaicin extract in it along with the three pepper blend. And oh my God. The first 15 second had an unbeatable flavor then the heat kicked up and I was unintentionally crying for about 5minutes. Woo boy was it good. Rated at a million Scoville.

Out of the blue I started stopping at garage sales within a mile or two of my house late this Summer. For the 50 cents asking price I couldn't walk away. That album sleeve is glorious on a level his flautist jazz fusion music contained within has no hopes of reaching.

I saw 30 women in a 4/5 CX race this past weekend. So, the field sizes are there in many places. I don't think one should change the rules for issues in one area.

That said, women in general do have a harder time earning points due to field sizes. This is why I generally think there should be some flexibility on upgrades, and I appreciate how our local association deals with it.

TheKillerPenguin 09-25-17 01:51 PM

I am generally in favor of upgrades remaining difficult and byzantine.

Okay, maybe not the byzantine part!
