I purchased a new (51 t) chainring, chain, stem and handlebar tape for my track bike today. Also swapping out the tore up old saddle on there with a new and unused Specialized Power that I took off my venge. I'm excited to get it all nice and spiffy .

the one p12 road race I won in the pouring rain on farm roads was like that. the road spray was unbelievably salty. no organic farms out there in the central valley.

The upside of this is that it's given me a needed break from burrowing further down the rabbit hole that cycling is for me. For example, I'm currently working my way through a book of C. S. Lewis essays written during the WWII time frame. I'm also aggressively enlarging my music collection by hitting all the Goodwill stores and such in the area - I scored a double CD set of Julian Bream and John Williams in primo shape for $0.49 among other things.

Planning my return to form has been fun too. My annual trip to Tucson has been tentatively moved up to mid-November so I can do El Tour and that one-rep hill repeat that is Mt. Lemmon. Next year's goals involve lotsa miles combined with lotsa climbing, and now I'll be hungry for those winter base miles rather than kinda bored. I'm already looking forward to getting back on the trainer soon, and I avoid the trainer like the plague most years.

While this isn't the ideal way to take a break from the bike, I'm making some pretty decent lemonade from those lemons.

I haven't done it, but @TMonk has. Here is the website, and the overall results are here. The first finishers averaged >25 mph for 106 miles with ~4k feet of climbing. OTOH, the last 300 or so folks (of 2123 total riders) took > 9 hours to do it. I definitely won't be on the sharp end. My guess is I'll end up around the five-hour mark if I find a paceline I'm comfortable with, probably a half-hour longer if I end up going solo. Two months or so off the bike ain't going to help my speed.

El Tour is competitive at the pointy end, but just a big ol' group ride for most participants. It's fun! @Ttoc6 I highly recommend it. I have family there so I go every year.

If you finish under 5 hrs or are a P/1/2 you get the "Platinum" start, which is a separate roped off area at the front. It can be a little wild at first as people try to seed themselves into fast groups, and after that it can be pretty smooth and fast. There are only a few features on the course that force selections.

my fb "2 years ago today" was a podium pic when I won a 12-person CCCX race.

from left-to right: national champion - national champion - me - 2nd to doper Kale at nats crit - national champion.

that's the race when I decided I should go to Ogden (I got 4th). My wife was pregnant with the twins at the time and that skinny sexy winner had no ****ing idea what was coming for him!

Don't let your buffers overflow!

Or inject SQL, it's never good.

I think this is clearly what you're referencing, but I'm going to add it anyway because it's one of my favorite xkcd (there are so, so many that are great though, it's hard to even say this is one of my favorites).

Buffer overflows, sql injections and race conditions, oh my!

Spent a bunch of time ssh'd in a database today. Trying to figure out how to setup an automated backup, ideally to a local (to me, not the server) drive to keep it all safe. Seems to be a challenge when you're only allowed in through an ssh server. I can manually move it over through psftp, but need to figure out a script or something to get it set up automatically.

I was tinkering with Crons yesterday. Something, something permissions issue when I tried to restart it. I'll see if actually worked when I'm back at work on monday. I have to worry about security to a very high level at this job, so I'm not sure an email solution will work, but I'll definitely look into it.
