has it been hot & dry? those conditions favor wasps. bees really only ever sting if you accidentally hit them or agitate them somehow.

We've actually had a good bit of rain, but it has been pretty hot. One of them I think I stepped on while taking the pool solar cover off (might have been lounging on it). That one I'm not sure if it was a bee or not. I think it was a small bee.

The one yesterday I think was a wasp. He was brown looking (as much as I could tell while fleeing in terror) and was still alive after he stung me (because he almost got me again when I went to finish mowing). I gave up and let him have the mower, he owns that part of the yard for now. Hopefully he'll keep it maintained. I threw one of my gloves off so quickly that I somehow lost it between the mower and the house.

I somehow managed to get myself into mobile view on my desk top. I thought something was wrong with the site. Glad to have figured that out.

The sky has been orange the past few days; it almost looks like another planet. There's ash all over the place, so I'll probably have to Zwift this weekend. Our Saturday hammer ride goes right into the fires smoke path (about 15 miles away) so that's probably out for me even though I guarantee people will show.

it's the most common break in young kids. he bounced right off the edge of a trampoline at a play gym and he inherited my brittle clavicle gene, I guess.

What happened? Did he cross wheels at the crit or cook a corner on the descent?

edit - silly me for assuming he can't handle a bike...

My sister broke her arm when she was 2 - she's 35 now. She was in a cast so long, she became partially right-handed. Now, she writes left handed, but plays sports right handed.

Interesting. I figured arms were more common, but my sample size is very small.

On 'Casual Fridays' today, two of my favorite co-workers and I wore nerdy Chemistry T-shirts (I'm on the left):

This room (ICP mass spec room) is sort of my personal lair; you can tell b/c there is a bike stored in it

Also I'm not that short (5'9") they're just tall

My wife's aunt teaches HS chem and one Xmas we got her a t-shirt that said "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate." (I'm sure you've seen that somewhere.)

Nice. I hope you don't have to run the microwave digestor - what a pain in the ass.

Also shorts in a lab? Lucky

Yeah, I'm the ******* that makes my students where pants no matter the weather (working with antibiotic resistant pathogens is a pretty good reason in my book).

Yeah I can wear shorts in the lab haha - although I'd chose to wear something different if I had planned on doing a lot of hands-on wet chemistry that day.

The microwave digestor is something that I convinced my boss we needed to purchase a while back to help with high-throughput metal analysis of refractory oxides and biological materials that need elevated temperature for complete dissolution. I've since developed the methodology to dissolve our particles in rat blood samples (for cancer treatment) with a HNO3/HCl/Peroxide/HF matrix for over 1000 samples, which from a synthesis and characterization perspective has enabled a tremendous amount of billing.

I use the microwave myself for custom/one-off/challenging samples, but for continuous projects like that I develop the methodology and then recruit lower-level resources to do the day-to-day sample prep and cleaning. Same with the operation of the mass spec itself.

So yeah it's a PITA but I love it

Lastly @Ttoc6 there are no passwords or other savory bits of information on the post-its, mainly tuning and calibration tips that I leave there to help the routine operators

My former lab had a MARS5 that was rarely used. Very few knew how to use it and some of the staff were scared of it... just because it exploded one time - and I don't mean a vessel vented - it went boom and filled the lab with an orange cloud (NO2).

Hope you're not putting too much HF through your MS.

Naw not too much. We don't use HF for much trace level analysis and we're typically afforded 5-figure dilution factors by the time it goes through in most instances.

I've also done my fair share of melting/exploding vessels using an older MarsX . CEM has some excellent applications scientists that have helped me out a lot over the years. Digestion protocols aren't always directly transferable from system to system so consulting the literature only is a risky way to go.

fantastic road and off road riding in that area

Although it starts in MD, you could build a lot of routes from this. Civil War Century. I've ridden most or all of these roads at some point, generally speaking, they are very rural and have a significant degree of variability of terrain. No super long climbs or high altitude, but many that are steep and approx 1.5 to 2.5 miles in length.

2 hours northeast is Trexlertown velodrome and some of the best riding anywhere. Also where bicycling magazine is.
