How does your team split money from primes?

Took a cash prime last weekend and the guys told me to keep it for myself. Wondering if this is normal or if most teams split them like regular prize money.

My team used to have a policy that all winnings were to be split among everyone who starts the race. It was fairly formal and done to ensure there were not fights/disagreements about who helped who win a race or prize. We all had the option to not accept it if we didn't think we deserved it.

Sounds about right.

The very few times I've been in a race where I've won a prime (or even prize money) I'd offer it to the teammates that helped. At our level though (Cat 3s) the money is more symbolic. Splitting a $20 prime 4 ways doesn't do much, and the one time I got decent money when I had a lot of teammates, it'd have netted about $5 per rider anyway. At my favorite race (Tuesday Night Worlds, USAC permit race) the win and prime if any is a can of soda or a beer for riders over 21. Not very easy to split that, and I've left the "prize" behind any time I've won it.

The driving principle is to share the joy. The reality is that teamwork is worth much more than a few dollars here and there; the teamwork is actually the value in the equation, not the prize offered by the promoter.

We usually just use the cash to help for for lunch after the race.

I vote to keep primes for yourself. They don't count towards anything, so some don't want to bother. I like primes, though, so will usually contest them on my own. Got two $100 primes in my last race. A lot more than what I got for the final result.

I voted "winner keeps it", but my team will pool all prize money then split it, for races with big $$ awards.

Recently we came away with like $750, including $300 in primes. None of us do this for the money, but it's nice to share sometimes.

If it's a $50 prime though it's not worth splitting.

If it's a cash prime, I will usually use it to buy post race beverages for the team. If it's beer, I donate it to the team. If it's wine, I give it to my wife. If it's anything else, I usually just keep it.

I don't sprint for anything that isn't cash. I accidentally sprinted for a gift card two years back because I only heard the dollar amount. Still have that gift card... eh...
