McEwen/Armstrong Conflict

I have just read the interview with Robbie on cyclingnews.com and I have read yet again about Armstrong and McEwen not getting along. Can someone tell me why there is animosity between these two, and what were the circumstances leading up to this so called ongoing feud that they apparently have?

It does seem that Lance doesn't have too many friends in the peloton.

why does everyone have to be pals in the pro field? They are on opposite teams. Lance has gone out of his way to be an ass to Landis. Are all of his Lance Worshipers pissed about that?

Your definition of being an ass and Lance's definition of intimidating a rival are evidently the same thing. This isn't the Rotary club here, it is competition, and rivalry is what it is. It is nice if you can have a good relationship with your rivals but it just doesn't work out that way all the time.

Perhaps you should read the new book Lance's War.

That's interesting. 'Cause Robbie just called me to tell me not to waste my time on this.

Generally rivals don't like each other much, although they have to respect each other's abilities. If I couldn't beat my rival in the big one after six years, I think I'd be pissed too. But as far as Lance being an ass to Landis, I am sorry, but I don't think I have had a loving relationship with any former boss at a place that I quit.
Who cares why? They don't have to be buddies, they have to go out every race and try to win in the most convincing fashion possible. And if one of the other competitors doesn't like it, maybe they should ride faster and stay ahead!

I'm not even sure Lance and Robbie are rivals. Lance doesn't get mixed up in bunch sprints and Robbie is no where to be seen when things get steep. One wonders why they even care about each other.

I don't think LA and McEwen are exactly competitors as LA doesn't contest the sprints and McEwen is no GC threat.

2 maybe 3 Tours ago the 2 got into it over something or the other and McEwen threatened to "punch lights out" or something to that effect. After that the word was that LA had USPS give Zabel some help though McEwen won Green that year IIRC.

Perhaps this is a lasting residue? McEwen strikes me as a bit petulant and LA is one to hold a grudge by all accounts. Doubt much could come out of it. McEwen can't really do anything about LA's podium goals and LA will allow his team to help out someone else only so much. Besides McEwen's rival for Green this year is Boonen, an ex-USPSer.

Sounds like a clash of two gargantuan egos, nothing new in sports. ANd it's true, why does everyone have to be pals and buddies? There are guys on the same teams who don't like each other much but get along in the field because they need the talent. Guess what folks, life isn't an episode of FRIENDS!

Two fairly decent sized egos having to share the same road.....

Robbie-angry ant.

Lance-likes to hold a grudge.

There you go.

I think Robbie could take Lance, easy. I saw that "boxer" commercial, Lance hits like a girl.

What Robbie lacks in height, he makes up for in aggro.

This and more in this weeks thrilling episode of As the Cranks Turn. Heart-throb badboy Robbie crosses wheels with big man on the block Lance, while the ever lovely Sheryl's emotions are split asunder by the choice of green or yellow! And tomorrow, don't miss the hottest new drama since Cranks..... .....Peloton.

Added to which, Robbie would stick the head in on LA. Nobody survives the Glasgow Kiss if it's done right!

My 4-year-old used to do this until I got in the habit of locking the bathroom door.

Ok, I have to admit, despite by Scottish heritage, I had to look it up.

It's not very sporting to head-butt someone in the nose, but I guess all's fair in love and cylcing.

It's an aussie thing, everyone gets a diminutive name. Like Stuart o'grady is Stuey, and Baden Cooke is Cookie.

Reading some of the antics and rivalries of the past makes this discussion so trivial.

There were much more heated feuds between some of the more prominant riders both on and off the bicycles in times past. Some are still fuming today.
Just pick up the latest issue of Procycling or Cycle SPort. Every issue has someone who's still complaining about what someone else did 20 years ago.
