It was about seeing how far I could go. I made it to the 2s before stopping. My time in the 3s was very rewarding.

It's about competiton, about being as good as you can be and seeing how that stacks up to everyone else. Bragging is for the insecure. Cat 1s are guys not good enough to be a pro (currently for some, ever for most). What the hell is there to brag about?
We are discussing "illegitimate" reasons for upgrading. Legitimate reasons have already been covered.

They are delicious so there is no faulting you for that.

The best brag to non bike racers I call the transitive property of race results. I actually beat a bike racer in our Tuesday night series that beat Lance Armstrong in a crit in Las Vegas, therefore I beat Lance Armstrong. This gets a lot more kudos than bragging that I'm a cat 2. It doesn't matter to office mates that the racer was riding as a lead out for his team, then dropped off before the pack sprint when I beat him, or that Lance Armstrong was just riding the crit for a pack finish to protect his GC results.
