Team benefits

Those of you that race at the lower level, Cat 5 and Cat 4, and are on a team, what kind of benefits do you get from your sponsor(s)? Race fees paid? Discounts at a bike shop? A box of hammergel? A punch in the face? Just curious.

I get a free jersey, free helmet, free maitenence at the lbs, and a 10-30% discount on everything. I'm not sure if racing fees are paid for, I should probably ask before the first race

Free Uniforms, re-imbursed entry fees, 10% over cost on new bikes. In exchange for that, we have to be competitive, and volunteer on club supported events like charity rides and earth day rides etc..

free uniforms, random free sponsor gear, occasional free massages, 25% off everything at the LBS. Our sponsors don't pay our entry fees, but i really don't care. We also have a team budget, so if the majority of out team is going to a specific race, then sometimes the leaders of the team will decide to pay for hotels out of the team budget. One of the guys on the team is a PT, and he helps anyon eout with injuries and makes free coaching schedules for the juniors. Some of the racers at the higher levels also recieve a bit more than that 25% from one of our main sponsors.

Discounted products, everything from tires to nutrition, etc. Reimbusement for race fees (although I have not used it this year) to a certain dollar amount per race, uniforms at huge discounts, and other discounts at the local LBS.

Also non monatary, support from other racers, team tactics in a race, training rides, etc.

We have to pay for our uniforms, but they are discounted. Also get 20% off at the lbs and race fees paid.

Don't look for perks for joing a team or race club. I got "free" jersey and shorts but I had to pay a one time membership fee of $140 and annually $40. 10% off at the sponsoring LBS but even that it is cheaper to order stuff online. We have team order deals with huge discount. Some of the hotter items are usually on backordered like the Ritchey Carbon wheels. I think they are also final sales and no return or exchange either. Go join a race club or team because you want to learn how to race as a unit with a common goal.

We got a full team kit for free, jersey, shorts, helmet. Massive discounts on everything and one bike a year at cost. We also have one mechanic at the shop who is always available to wrench on our bikes. We get other things for free here and there also.

Be invited. Usually if you are good and getting good result with your races. There are sucky teams as well too and they may just take in anyone they think who has some potential. Racing for a team means that you have to follow race plans and training schedules. Race clubs have an open door policy. As long as you pay the fee, you are in. Even within a club, there are some significant team work as well. I belong to a race club but we do race as a team since there are only couple of us racing in the season.

Ninty percent of what is out here in SoCal are race clubs, which take members of all abilities with a desire to race. Most hold several training rides or participate in several training rides per week. Team tactics are usually practiced with people in your catagory. There are also some race teams that are geared for the pro 1 - 2 crowd that generally race in the local races that the pros ride in and are more structured to that respect. Many clubs have normal members and elite members groups.

Out race club has 70 members, about 40 are activly racing, about a core of 20 or so are racing 10 - 16+ races per season. We are geared mostly around cat 3 - 5 racers but have guys that are pro 1 - 2. We all recieve the same benefits and have to pay for certain things (see my post above). Both of the major clubs in the area (jelly belly and healthnet (us)) operate close to the same.

Our race club is open to anyone; it is not a "by invitation only" club You don't have to race but it is encouraged. There is an annual fee which gets you membership and a jersey. If you want shorts, extra jerseys, socks, arm warmers, vests, socks, gloves, etc. you have to pay but at a discounted club rate. You can get discounts on bikes, components, accessories, etc. from various sources (depends on who the club sponsors are in any particular year.)

Depending on the number of entrants in a race and your placement, the club reimburses your race entry fee. If you work as a team to help a teammate achieve a good result, you can get a reimbursement even if you don't finish near the top. In order to get a reimbursement you have to request it and you have to write a race report.

ride hard, have commitment, ask around at races, scour the web for clubs near you. SOme teams are "open" to new members, others are not and you have to prove yourself first.

I was invited/recruited to join my team. In general, this team seems to work by word of mouth: friends vouch for each other to the team "captain" who decides whether to take them on based on their race record. The guys I know in my area (members are spread across several states) are Cat 2s and 3s, a couple of 'em Masters riders.

No fees, free team kit, apparently race fees could be reimbursed but it seems to be hit or miss, I don't think we have any standing deals but we've got a lot of contacts that we can leverage for bikes and equipment and such.

Up to $10/race reimbursed max $150/season. Must pay membership fee that includes a jersey ~$70. 25% above wholesale at shop, some sponsors: Fizik, Speedplay, Zipp, Schwalbe Tires, Salsa Bikes to name some; they offer us major discounts. Major out of town events you can petition for special sponsorship, which I plan to do for Tour de Toona for example.

Yeah I'm riding as a C5 this season, I was a C3 back in the early 90's but I was nearly killed by a hit-and-run driver so I stopped racing. I just started again this season and will cat up this fall. I plan on racing the first half of the year (06) as a 4 then hopefully cat up to 3's. In 07 I'll be a 45 master.

Our team is 360 Cycleworks in Austin Texas and we have two teams. 360 Cycleworks is kind of developement/learning group of 4's and 5's while Team Brain and Spine is the 3 and up group.
