Endurance Ride Diet Recommendations
I am participating in a 155 mile ride with 13k feet of climbing this weekend. Some food is provided at the rest stops and I will bring the usual enrgy drink (w/ carb/protein mix) and energy bars.
Which other foods and supplments should I bring along to infuse the usual diet with extra nutrition to sustain the 10-12 hour ride? Cheerios, nuts, m&m mix, flat cola, pb&j sandwich, e-caps, etc.? Any suggestions are appreciated - Thanks, Peter PS: I searched the forum for similar posts to no avail. |
Sounds like Climb to Kaiser? Bring some baggies of your drink mix, so can refill at the rest stops. I would add some gels and maybe a baggie of Fig Newtons, Dried Fruit and pretzels to your list. You shouldn't need to bring too much because you can fuel up at the rest stops. Whatever you bring, make sure it's something your body is used to, this is not the ride to start experimenting with nutrition. Good Luck :D
Also, pack a little baggie with e-caps, advil and tums. Personally I take one of each (sometimes two if it's hot or I'm hurtin') at each rest stop and it really helps with cramping. |
Climb to Kaiser it is. The snow at the pass has cleared, so they will let everyone all the way to the top at 9,200 feet. Can't wait :-). I am pretty familiar with the course, so I am bringing the powder to make drinks at top of each climb, keeping only the minimum amount of water I need to make it between rest stops. Good idea about the advil and tums as well as the pretzels for sodium. Thanks!

On long rides just make sure you eat enough, I vary it between gu, cliff bars, and bannanas. Keep in mind that if your not at the head of the pack the rest stops may be out of stuff, so make sure you have enough food to eek by at least one empty rest stop.

I just completed a double with 10,200 feet of climbing. My diet was as follows:
Bagel with ham and cheese 1 hour before ride Alternating between a gel and an energy bar every hour during the ride Alternating between water and cytomax, 1 bottle every hour 2 PB & J sandwiches at the 100 mile mark I felt great on the ride! |
Just an update. The 155 mile ride went well. There was a good choice of foods - PB&J , Ham and Cheese, watermelon, bananas, etc. I also took Rejuvinator supplement tabs (2/hr) and a tylonol (1 every 2 hours) and I felt great. Cytomax and water rounded out the diet. Thanks for all the suggestions.
