My race report

While I'm not a hard core racer, I sucked it up and entered a road race Friday morning. The race was held at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort on an 11 mile circuit that was scheduled for 2 laps, 22 miles. The course was almost completely flat, but vicious winds can scream down the airfeild. 30 people entered, all but 3 were Marines. I felt a bit out of place, but I knew I had been training hard and was ready to hammer things out for about an hour and fifteen minutes.

I goofed my start, I tried clipping in the wrong side of my left pedal. I picked my way through the feild and settled in with a group of riders around my speed (18-22mph no pros here). The fog was thick, so I started loosing track of how many riders I had passed.

My split time was 36:48, and I just found a rythem and kept it up. The other three riders and I worked out a plan to try to catch up by working together to fight the headwinds on the first half of the loop. We decided to throw it all out after the last turn. It worked enough to catch and drop two others on the headwind stretch.

We came around the north end of the airstrip only to be buzzed by an F/A 18 taking off. We made the turn that put the wind to our backs, and red Trek boy took off. We all followed after him, catching him right as we came to the only decsent on course, where I attacked, sort of. I got caught, and then proposed a $5 bet per rider at the line, which all three declined.

We then ascented the only "climb" (all 80 yards), then I attacked again, this time I caught black Nishiski off gaurd and dropped him. Red Trek and blue Cannondale passed me back on a left hand turn. Then came the final stretch. I was about 30' behind red Trek, caught and passed him 600' from the finish line with blue Cannondale 20' ahead. I hammered with everything I had (which isn't too much), and beat blue Cannondale by 8 seconds.

I finished 15th overall at 1:14:10 (+14:30), 3rd in my division (open, male, 19-34). I even picked up my first racing trophy! That finial push earned me the trophy, as blue Cannondale was 4th in the same division.

It was more fun then a serious race. No one was whining or complaining nor was mad at anyone. The Marines got to count the race as a PT, and I got the satisfaction of taking off 6 minutes off my old time on that course and picking up one position from last time. I don't plan on racing anymore this year.

Nice job on the 3rd place. No more races? Sounds like you had fun ... are you averse to having fun?
