Three GTs on 2006 Pro Tour calendar!
The UCI Pro Tour Council (UPTC) approved the 2006 Pro Tour calendar yesterday, and the three Grand Tours - Giro, TdF, and Vuelta - are on it.
In December, they will firm the calendar contents through 2009.

Good, but I still like the old system of UCI rankings. Seeing the same 20 teams competing at all the ProTour events is good for Joe Public, but purists enjoy variety. So many races that div1 teams used to send riders to are now nothing more than local Kermesses. Luckily, history and reputation will keep them alive for a while, but their importance has been greatly negated.

True. But don't forget that the Pro Tour teams are required to have enough riders to field what is at least two teams. And since they schedule overlapping races, the personnel from any given team at any given race varies a lot.
And there are often several more than 20 teams in a race, which gives the Continental teams and others a chance to show as well.
In fact, there are hints that there will be changes in the Pro Tour - let's hope so - that will allow more mixing of lower category teams with the Pro Tour teams, and some possibility of elevation/promotion. No details yet, but the Irishman seems to think that changes are in order according to comments so far.

There will still be continental teams to compete except maybe the Tour. Selle Italia had a nice showing at this year's Giro.
