what's there not to get? A&F makes clothes. Now they're sponsoring a bike team. Sponsors of bike teams buy their clothing. At the very least, the riders' off the bike wear will be pretty amusing.

I didn't get it either. I thought it was just me. I even clicked the link and read the entire article on Chris Horner. Although interesting, it had nothing to do with a clothing sponsor. My guess is there was an article below the Chris Horner one that did reference it. However, at this point I've already wasted enough of my time and don't give a rat's azz.

It's a regional team. They're mostly local riders, though Jim Baldesare and Mark Hekman are pretty strong. Jim Baldesare has a stars and stripes jersey in his closet.
Here's some trivia that you get from being a race announcer: Mark Hekman is a music performance major from The Ohio State University. His instrument: Bassoon.
Worked his way through OSU at an LBS in the Short North part of Columbus.

The answer is they having nothing to do with cycling other than the fact that they sponsor a cycling team (or did at one point) as a means of advertisement.

The article starts off, "An elite team in the midwest, with designs on making the jump to UCI Continental team status either this season or next," mentions the Pro Tour, and then, "If they end up at Georgia, they are going to be like the other small teams like Jittery Joe's and act as the giant killer. "
Sounds like this team has some serious aspirations of making it beyond just being regional in the U.S. That's a big commitment... I hope A&F's pockets are deep if they wish to field a team in Europe. That would be cool.
BTW, A&F's clothes have gotten to be so, umm.... teeny-bopper. All distressed t-shirts and shredded cargos. I have some old A&F clothes from before they really changed their marketing strategy. The old stuff is rock-solid clothing in the vein of LL Bean and Eddie Bauer. I wish they'd bring that kind of stuff back, but it's hard to sell real outdoor gear with nekkid teen models, I guess...

There was a time when if you wanted to outfit an
expedition to Africa you went to Abercrombie and Fitch.
They made arguably the best Raincoat (trench coat) on
the planet, high dollar stuff.
Personally I wouldn't care if Victoria's Secret sponsored a team
(well I wouldn't want to see Maggy in their products) as long
as it gets more US teams out there and possibly in either
the continental or pro circuits

It used to be the sporting goods company to the rich and powerful, didn't it?
I still have a great sport shirt from the old A&F in Houston. It's got to be 40 years old, but it's still in great shape.

And no, Abe looks neither totally gay nor is he a model.
As for why, the head of A & F is a bit of a cycling nut himself. Who cares why they sponsor them?

It's too bad they only make the "Do I Make You Look Fat?" T-shirts for girls.

Sorry for the late jump on this one...haven't been around the forums for a while.
I personally know several of the riders on the upcoming team and I think they'll be an excellent regional squad.
Mark is a crazy guy but a heck of a rider. He's ready to explode if he can avoid injury this year.
Oh, and Baer Wheels is in Clintonville, not the Short North. It's just up High Street a few miles.
Good luck to all of the team this year. It's nice to see a new major sponsor (deep pockets) come on to the American scene.

Throw the stick!!!!
I am on one of the club teams that is part of the A & F team. The primary sponsor of our club team is Mazza winery. We were all pretty excited when we hear the news about A & F. Doubt I will benefit much from it though but still pretty cool.
