Why was Michael Creed MIA in 2005?

While watching the T of Ca last night, Paul Sherwen mentioned that breakaway leader Michael Creed had been away for awhile. I went to Creed's website and it doesn't mention why the 2005 season was a blank.

Did he get sick or what? I remember him being interviewed in the documentary "Pro" about how excited his was to get signed by Disco, back in 2003, but apparently they dumped him - he's on some unknown team now...

What's the scoop?

i wouldn't call tiaa-cref unknown ... but, if you recall in "pro" he was going to go to school when he got the call from disco. maybe he was taking classes.

I saw him race on the disco team late October last year. I was watching TOC and I thought I recognized him, but it was a guy in cref garb. I didn't know he had switched teams.

I really don't care though, as I have a TIAA-CREF account. I kinda feel like I own him...

He got a phone call from Lance sometime last August that he wasn't going to be resigned. Not sure if it was the amount of sickness during the year or the going after the guy on the wall in Philly (I don't blame him for that one). The SFGP was his last race for Disco - he lead for most of the race. He was also supposed to make an announcement about his new team at the time but I don't think they had all of their 'i's dotted. It kind of happened quietly.

Pro contracts usually go from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, so you can be signed for a team for the next season but anytime before Dec. 31 you are supposed to wear your current teams clothes while racing and usually while training. I was at the Oakley party after SFGP last year and was talking to Steve Hegg, manager of the Succesfulliving.com Continental pro team, when Creed arrived. Creed's deal may have been in the works but when Steve asked him what he would be doing this season Creed replied that he wasn't sure and proceeded to exchange information with Steve.
He did have have Epstein-Barr last year which significantly reduced the amount of races he was able to do.

He raced in his Discovery kit here in Wyoming in our Dead Dog Classic 25 June 2005. I talked to him briefly and he he said that he was starting to feel pretty good, but that it was still going to be a while before he felt 100%. I was also at the turnaround on the road race. The Pros had just finished a 10 mile downhill stretch and after the turn immediately started a 4% grade (and getting steeper for the next 10 miles), and as they went around the cone, they all started grunting and groaning as they knew that they had 44 more miles to go and another 3000 plus feet of climbing. They also knew that they had to finish the race with 10 miles of undulating road into a very stiff headwind! Creed came in 3rd in the race (local strong man Clayton Barrows was first - and by the way last weekend was 4th overall in the Valley of the Sun) 12 seconds behind Jonathan Baker (Pro Peloton Paketa) and 18 seconds behind Barrows (then racing for RMCEF).

He also had back problems late in the season which kept him from competition.

I did hear some grumbling about the uncoordinated chase in Philadelphia. But wasn't sure about the details. But I got the impression, it wasn't a team sanctioned thing.

I'm fascinated as to how you think TIAA-CREF is an unknown team. Just never heard of them or don't like them, eh? And also I believe he injured himself early 2005. My coach used to race with him when he was on Prime Alliance.
