Think Lance and Miguel were the first spinners? Read this!

A recent article in the British bike mag Cycling Plus stated that the late "Angel of the Mountains" Charly Gaul would often spin 120 rpm on mountain attacks and the smallest gear on his bike was a 45 x 24

So much for compact cranksets and triples, right?

Isn't he the one that sprinted ahead on a solo breakaway on a hot day so he could jump into a fountain, story goes he would have dropped out of dehydration, if he had not. He ended up losing thetour by about the same duration as his time in the fountain.

I think that it was. Torelli's history of the TDF said that he never was one for the heat.

You know that Gaul was a dope fiend, right? He took so many amphetamines he lost his mind and lived most of his life in a shack in the woods.

Yeah - He and Ted Kaczinski would have been good friends. Too bad.
From what I have been reading, he must have been one helluva climbing stud grinding that 25 lb. steel bike in addition to that huge gearing that he used!

He raced in the 50's and 60's. Of course he was a dope fiend.

Am I missing somehing? Huge gearing? He's running less than a 2:1 ratio...or 49.3 gear inches. Thats not all that high. A modern 34-21 setup is 42.5 inches....

45x24 is equal to a 39x21 or a 34x18 in gear inches. You don't think that's kind of steep for a climbing gear?

Who can here can climb Alpe D' Huez in a 39 x 21 comfortably? I want your autograph.
