Axel Merckx..... no more Merckx bikes?

Is Axel Merkckx not allowed to ride his dad's bikes anymore? Here is a picture before the Giro, and he is riding a BMC.

This is at a press event, so maybe he had to get pictures with the BMC,a nd then rides his Merckx?

I just found a picture of him riding Liège-Bastogne-Liège on a BMC as well.
https://www.cyclingnews.com/photos/20...ckxonlaredoute

That really stinks that he is not allowed to ride the family bikes.

You join a pro team. You have to wear the kit and ride what is given. That's the rules you are paid by? No exceptions?

I'm sure BMC, with their large investment in the Phonak team, would beg to differ.

Last year when Axel rode for Davitamon - Lotto he was allowed to ride the family bikes.

Hence the reason I wondered why he wasn't this year.

You sure its a BMC frame? Could it be a Merckxx painted and labeled as a BMC? I know some riders in the past rode frames built by other builders... (shrug)

2002 Giro Prologue

My favorite would be the all pink Giro 2005 prologue, but I couldn't find a big enough picture:

I can understand BMC wanting Merckx to ride the bikes they supply since doing so is a HUGE financial commitment to small bicycle company (they're all small weenies, learn how to read a financial statement or annual report some time and compare it to oh, IBM).

And who would understand THAT better than Eddy Merckx, who has a small bike company? Duh.

Honest to God, to any of you read ANYTHING outside of Bicycling and this dopey forum? Fortune magazine? The New York Times? The Wall Street Journal?

that was my point... I highly doubt Axel riding a BMC is making such a HUGE difference in their sales, that I was wondering if maybe Axel perferred his BMC over his dad's bikes. Now if Floyd wanted to ride a different bike, then I see BMC making a big deal about because he is a much higher profile rider.

I agree with you. Cipo's antics were cute. Funny. But, established pro riders are commodities. Like it or not. Corporations sponsor the successful one's. There is a price for that sponsorship, we all like it or not.
Might say riders are allowed an authorized personality, beyond that , they are sort of like race horses; except team kit allows for far more advertising.
thank god, on the big pro races, betting has yet to be established.

Axel rides what his employer tells him to ride. Axel rode his dad's bikes at Lotto, as back then they, Merckx, were a sponsor. If Axel was still at Lotto, he'd be riding a Ridley.

I do not think that Merckx is a Pro Tour sponsor currently. Possibly, they elected not to pour money into a sponsorship. It's a lot more than a few bikes...a lot more.

To the anti corporate folks...there is nothing wrong with a company paying millions to have people riding around (or driving around or whatever) to have certain expectations of how those people will act. They are representing those companies (and themselves, so you'd think they would have a bit more pride)...case in point, the reason why Mapei is no longer involved in pro cycling was due to the final blow being the Garzelli doping deal in the Giro a few years back. The owner, sponsoring the winningest team in cycling history, pulled out as he did not want his company associated with these types of situations. Liquigas left team sponsorship for a few years for the same reason. Festina...there are others.
In the case of Cipo, that was actively supported by Cannondale and Saeco.
