Crit Report 8.

Cliff notes version in video.

My worst race ever.

This race was over for me before it even began. I managed to psyche myself out and had excuses lined up before the start and did not have enough early lap success to pull myself out of that funk.

The race was a new one for me at a different location on a different night. I only got out to this one because my wife is out of town so I have the car.

I had heard about this race from a friend of mine who is a regular there. He described it as having a bit of a hill.

I get there and do a warm up around the course. The bit of a hill is a 146 ft elevation gain on a 1 mile circuit. A typical race is 10 laps which ends up being 1460 feet of climbing in a crit.

The hill psyched me out. I had not been on a bike since my last race which was 5 days ago. This also psyched me out.

So many people were at this race with spectators lining the start finish area and lots of girls. Hot, happening cycling girls in numbers I never could have imagined. My mind is wandering and my eyes are going crazy.

The race starts with around 20 guys in the cat 5. A couple of familiar faces line up. Bike Store Boy is one of them. He races here allot I find out. Yea he takes the win.

The first laps go ok, I’m just hanging in. The hill is killing me but I can keep the pace. The downhill is super fast with a long sweeping corner at the bottom. We are going over 50km/h on the down hill coasting in the pelaton with the pullers peddling. I end up ducking out from the pace line just to catch wind to slow down and not overtake the puller. (I think it’s immoral to use the brakes in a crit)

4th lap and we lap the girls :-> Pun intended (see “screw that” in crit report 7)

This uphill/down hill is a new dynamic and I’m not versed on it. Instead of staying in the pace line I coast up to 2nd place and start the uphill. This is the beginning of my undoing. I let the puller open a gap on the hill and on the flats at the top of the hill. I push really hard to close it. This is where I should have been recovering from the hill so now we go down again and back up again but I do not have the legs this time. The peliton spits me out the back.

They are really far ahead now with the leaders getting to the bottom of the down hill just as I start the decent. The pack is very spread out. I follow a guy down just trying to catch my breath and hope to close on the corners at the bottom. At the bottom I keep my speed up in a last ditch effort to catch the peleton. I pass a couple of stragglers.

I’m lining up for a tight technical corner I intend to take supper fast. This is a one lane curbed corner. I’m fully leaned into the corner. A guy exiting the corner ahead of me collides with a straggler girl and goes down right in front of me. I lock up the rear, unclip, liftoff the bike and drift the bike sideways into the curb and I role on the nice soft grass.

DNF

The straggler girl decides it’s ok to ride in the middle of the road and newbie guy tried to go inside of her (there I go again) and did not make it. Newbie me couldn’t keep up today so I got to be taken out.

My bike rear wheel took the curb with a bit of a warp. The right brifter was knocked around the handle bar and the handle bar was knocked out of alignment with the front wheel. Everything else looks fine.

Oh yea, the other crashers were ok. Bit of road rash. The girl did not even go down.

I knock my bike back into shape mount it and got into the race again with 3 laps to go. As I’m getting into the now very small pack, Bike Store Boy goes by, pats me on the arm and congratulates me for getting back in it.

I love your reports, even if I didn't like how this turned out.

hey I just put the video in. All newbies should watch to see what hanging out with other newbies can end up like. Also, remember to look up and not at your front tire. Results of doing that can be seen by watching the guy who rides into the girl.

The last guy does a great job of avoiding it all.

Man the guy going down could have eaten a sandwich and still avoided that crash.
Glad all are well.
