Remember these guys?? Three months later...

... and we STILL have no real idea if they doped or not.

Ullrich, T-Mobile settle
Jan Ullrich has reached an agreement with his former T-Mobile team over the termination of his contract following doping accusations prior to this year's Tour de France.

The 32-year-old former Tour winner was sacked by T-Mobile after a Spanish police investigation offered evidence that he was given EPO and other banned substances by a Madrid-based sports doctor, Eufemiano Fuentes.

Ullrich, who continues to protest his innocence, said he would go to court over his T-Mobile dismissal but that has now been avoided.

A statement on Ullrich's website said: "Jan Ullrich and the T-Mobile team have ended negotiations and agreed on the early termination of his contract. The agreement has been drawn up and will be signed. It has been agreed that the contents will remain confidential."

Ullrich, earning a reported 2.5 million euros a year, was contracted with T-Mobile until the end of the season.

_____

Giro d'Italia champion Ivan Basso, who was excluded from the Tour de France after being implicated in a Spanish doping investigation, denied using banned substances Tuesday in his first appearance before Italian anti-doping authorities.

"It is clear that I have never engaged in doping," Basso said at the end of a two-hour hearing before a panel of the Italian Olympic Committee.

The hearing was adjourned to Sept. 12, when a decision on whether to refer the case to the Italian cycling federation is expected, said Massimo Martelli, Basso's lawyer. The federation could try him or request the case be dismissed.

Martelli said Basso is confident the case will be dismissed.

Basso, who looked calm after the questioning at Rome's Olympic Stadium, said the hearing had gone "as expected" and promised fans he will soon return to racing.

Lawyer Franco Cosenza, who headed the questioning, said Basso answered "exhaustingly," but that more time was needed to fully examine the documents in the case.

Basso was among nine riders -- including German veteran Jan Ullrich -- ousted from the Tour de France the day before it began. Their names had turned up on a list of more than 50 cyclists who allegedly had contact with a Spanish doctor accused of running a blood doping clinic in Madrid.

"(The documents) produced are absolutely insufficient. There is no direct evidence involving Basso," Martelli said.

During the hearing, a dossier with specifics of the Spanish probe was examined, Martelli said.

Italian Olympic officials said Basso could face a maximum two-year ban if found guilty.

A representative of Danish team CSC, which suspended Basso, also took part in the hearing.

"It's good that a hearing has started and that the case moved on," team spokesman Brian Nygaard said.

The 28-year-old Basso won the Giro d'Italia in May for his first major title.

---

For Chissakes, get on with it, are they guilty, or not?

Basso just had a hearing this week in Italy. From what I can hear, the Spanish authorities are holding out on releasing all the info -- I assume, but cannot verify offhand, that they are still building the case against Fuentes. I don't think Spain can do anything to the actual riders (I remember hearing that Spain does not have any anti-doping laws like some other states in the EU). I'm fairly confident that once the UCI gets all the info from OP, they'll start laying about with formal hearings; so the delays are most likely due to the Spanish authorities.

I agree that it's better for everyone if the process is handled in a reasonable time frame, but realistically I assume this season is shot for Ullrich and Basso, and most of the OP-related hearings won't be done until winter, longer for those who go to the CAS or local courthouses.

If Basso is cleared ::cough cough NEVER cough::..... do you think he will continue with CSC after Riis totally denied having anything to do with Basso and ruinign Riis' name?

What about Ulle? What team would touch him after T-mobile sacked him?

Another question is what becomes of T-Mobile. Andreas Kloden and Matthias Kessler have signed with Astana, and supposedly TMob has decided not to renew the contract of Serguei Honchar.

I remember reading in some German business report that Deutsche Telekom has had a particularly 'not spectacular' year and that there was further parlimentary work going on to reduce the monopoly they had, especially as it relates to internet service. There was speculation that DT would 'regroup' a lot of their efforts, including marketing...
They are planning/making a bigger push in the US to capture more of the cell market (T-mobile of course), and that means more diversion. Likely they're not looking at cycling as any bonus towards capturing US marketshare.
...so, maybe handwriting on the wall? like Phonak? or just a lower budget team?

maybe expect T-mobile Bar-B cookoff teams? NASCAR? Queer Eye with the German Gay Guy show?

1. good riddance to Kloden

2. kessler was a trouble maker anyway

3. wesserman has been getting paid big money and not delivered

4. rogers is still there

5. gerdemann is a talented rider, who's had a very respectable year, especially when you consider that he's something like 22.

Kloden and Kessler defined T-Mobile. BIG loss.
This OP crap broke in late June, we are heading into September and nothing but rumors are flying around.
Screw that, UCI cycling is a joke.
Ullrich and Basso are likely gone, regardless of investigations.

I'll tell you that Ludwig's absence will help that team.

The guy was a talented sprinter for sure but no master tactician.
