Okay, the subject is misleading. Anyhow...

When did Etats-Unis really break into international cycling? Was Greg Lemond the first, or were there others before him? It seems like a few would have precipitated from the bike boom of the early '70s. What about the very early years, in the days of Madison events? Anybody know?
