Unbreakable sports records

Fox has a list of most unbreakable sports records here:

https://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/6327596

Of course none are cycling records. Also they have a few that are not even the most unbreakable for the individual they list. At #5 is Wilt Chamberlains 100 point game. Some day this will fall. Trends change and eventually high scoring games will return and some game will go into 6 or 7 overtimes. May take a long long time. On the other hand Wilts average minutes per game will not fall at 51 or 52 minutes a game (Yea I know regulation is 48 minutes). For an entire season Wilt played every minute of every game, including all overtime.

At # 2 is Jerry rice for total receiving yardage. This may never fall. Or it might. The trend is more regular season games. Add 2 more per year (with 2 less preseason games) and perhaps someone will last long enough to pass this record. But Rice's recort for most consecutive games with a catch is a different story. It is more games than any other wide receiver has in his career.

But the reason for starting this thread is to pose the question:

What cycling records are unbreakable? Feel free to phrase the record in the terms that make it hardest to break.

Hardly in the unbreakable category. Mig had 5 in a row while riding other major tours. If someone aims on the TDF 7 is hardly unreachable. Of course it is safe for 7 years at least.

Eddy had 10 major tours in a row (Eg 10 out of 10 entered). That has the kind of thing that touches on unreachable as only one other rider has 10 tours total.

Anyone else have any ideas? Non-Eddy records prefered as only Eddy gets old. I can think of at least one For Coppi and One for Binda that seem out of reach. Perhaps one for Freddy Maertens also.

Oh and phrased correctly both Poulidor and Gino Bartoli have a couple. Poulidor for 7 podiums without a win (actually without ever being in Yellow) and Bartoli for 'back to back' TDF wins 10 years apart.

What about Eric Heiden's 5 individual gold medals?

Not exactly a cycling record as they were in speed skating though he later became a cyclist. I would also argue that it is not unbreakable as I recall in the last two olympic games there have been at least 2 americans with a shot, Apollo Anton Ohno in short track speed skating and Michael Phelps in swimming though one or both of those may be entirely wrong something in my memory is telling me they had a shot.

Track:
200m-19.32 Micheal Johnson
800m-1:41.11 Wilson Kipketer

W800m-1:53.28 Jarmila Kratochvílová. No one has come within 3 seconds of this in the last ~10 years, to my knowledge. She was chemically a man. This will never be broken by a PED-free woman.

Poulidor. Most second place finishes in the TDF without ever wearing the Yellow jersey.

Regarding Heiden's 5 golds at Lake Placid, he SWEPT all the men's speed skating events. With increased specializations at different distances, this one is pretty secure for the time being. It would be like one skier winning the Downhill, Super G, Giant Slalom, and the Slalom, plus the Alpine combined, all in one Olympics.

Other athletes may win more medals, but sweeping an entire sport is pretty impressive. I think the closest to his feat was Mark Spitz's 7 golds in Munich (while sporting long hair and a porno-stache, none-the-less!)

Depending n how one phrases it Spitz may be safe. His 7 included 3 relays. Much more rare for one country to win all 3.

Back to cycling. Coppi swept all major individual competitions in the TDF and Giro in one year (GC and KOM, no points existed). Only thing close since is Merckx taking the GC and Points in the Giro and Vuelta in 1973. I'm sure Coppi picked up more awards in those two, but not sure of more 'sweeps' that year. (Other awards being team and most aggressive).

By that logic then yes, especially considering they have added quite a few speed skating races since then, it also enhanced by the fact that in many olympic sprts such a sweep is not possible ie a runner winning the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000, 5000, 10,000, and marathon. However I was adressing the five individual gold's in one games.

Marita Koch's 400m record and Flo-jo's 100m record. Both records have stood for ever.

i guess they don't think it's unbreakable: Ted williams .400 season... a couple have come close though. It only seems to happen once every few years... the last was Garciaparra.

The thing is some of the records mentioned, like Flojo, haven't stood for that long. We're talking about some records that have stood for decades, like Alfredo Binda's stage wins until cipo broke it. That was like 70+ years...

The women's 1500m record is pretty suspect too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1500_me...metres_-_women

It was rumored that not only did they not conduct drug tests, but that the track was about 10m short at the Chinese national meet. Reason? You can't find pictures of the track, or the meet, anywhere.

I'd say Phelps has or at least had a shot at it last summer games, 7 Medals, 5 Gold 2 Bronze as I recall.

Citing Merckx is pretty silly. That's like saying 'all we need for somebody to hit .400 is another guy like Ted Williams'. You mean the (now deceased) guy that hung up his spikes 50 years ago? An athlete you may see once in a CENTURY? Like Merckx? How many Merckx's have we ever seen? Oh right one guy. And nobody else ever came close.

Again, there's no such thing as 'unbreakable'. But if any record will stand for many decades, it's the 7 straight TDF wins. Doping, no doping, whatever.

Bugger-all to do with cycling ... but Lara's 400 not out in the West Indies vs. England test match at St. Johns may well stand for decades. Unless you have played cricket at a decent level (county cricket at a minimum) it's almost hopeless to try and explain how unbelievable this kind of score is.

Edwin Moses winning 107 consecutive finals.

Jahangir Khan winning 555 matches ina row ... 5 years of total domination in the sport of squash.

All far more impressive that that crap put out by Faux.

Bradmans batting average of 99.94 in cricket.

Even with wickets being designed and curated to suit batsman these days no one has an average that is even close.
