Dick gets Pounded (well a little at least)

From Cyclingnews.

IOC reprimands Pound for Armstrong remarks

By Susan Westemeyer

The International Olympic Committee has reprimanded World Anti-Doping Agency head Richard Pound for comments he made suggesting that Lance Armstrong had used doping products, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Pound publicly suggested in 2005 that Armstrong had "very likely" used EPO during the 1999 Tour de France. The cyclist subsequently filed a complaint with the IOC's Ethics Commission.

The IOC upheld the Commission's finding that the remarks "could have been regarded as likely to impugn the probity" of Armstrong, and went against the Olympic goal of "a spirit of friendshp, solidarity and fair play".

The Ethics Commission had released its recommendation on February 2, saying that the IOC should "remind (Pound) of the obligatin to exercise greater prudence ... when making public pronouncements that may affect the reputations of others."

He's embarrassing. Doubly so for me because he's Canadian. I would deeply love to see the fight against doping gain the sort of credibility it deserves; he just serves to bring his mission into disrepute. Think of the irony behind that. Dopers seem to have more class than him. But, I guess the old truism, 'send a thief to catch...'

Hopefully this opens the floodgates of complaints to the IOC Ethics Commission by those that Pound has similarly commented upon. Sadly, Pound will likely use his notoriety at WADA to propel himself to another job. The difference between fame and infamy has disappeared.

It is this type of innuendo and statements that continue to plague all sports. Just come up with definitive test and test the athletes. If they pass let it go. If they don't kick them out for life. No second chances. the punishment should fit the crime.

You mean like this guy. Ban him for life! Me, I don't think things are always as black or white as people would like.

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationwo...,1444445.story
"Alain Baxter, 28, became the first Briton to win an Olympic medal in Alpine skiing, placing third in the slalom at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. Two days later he tested positive for methamphetamine, a banned stimulant. He was forced to forfeit his bronze medal.

"His offense? He had used a Vicks Vapor Inhaler bought in Utah to treat his chronic nasal congestion. Unlike the Vicks inhalers sold at home, the American version contained traces of a chemical structurally related to meth though lacking its stimulative qualities.

"Despite testimony from a Vicks scientist that the compounds differed, an arbitration panel hearing Baxter's case ruled that because anti-doping authorities regarded the chemicals as related, he was guilty."

/\/\/\Dear mother of god, asgelle and I agree on something! Yeah draconian measures in the world of doping are what's causing the issues now. Basso and Ulrich were denied a chance to be TdF champions without ever being convicted. There are so many banned substances that don't help increase athletic performance that issuing lifetime bans for non-negative tests would be even more unfair than the system is now.

Pound is skillfully increasing his own reputation at the expense of sports and the Olympic movement. I wonder what his next career goal is. Will he stay with the IOC or go into Canadian public office? Either way, humanity is harmed by him having any power at all.

It's obvious that he's only in this to try to make a name for himself. It's like an official at a sporting event that thinks the fans came to watch him or her officiate.
He could care less about "cleaning up sport"...he only cares about trying to "get" someone who is a big name.
Geez, even the freakin' UCI said to leave it alone.

You really have to wonder about WADA that they would leave Mr. Pound in charge. They can't believe that his leadership is effective.

Welllll...maybe they can.

I've also found it interesting that he's picked a sport where the athletes have little power or resource to fight back. Aside from Lance none of these guys have really deep pockets to fight him in the courts. They don't have a strong union like many other sports do, with which they could fight back collectively. Pound has found the perfect stage on which to spew his attacks. A sport with no defense, that does have some doping issues, and an event that has the worlds attention, the TdF. It's really sad that if done properly WADA could have a positive affect on cycling and sport in general. Unfortunately Pound has focused more attention on his rhetoric than the issues.
