If it says "Enve" it's not "budget". JMHO and all that jazz.

some people need to call their nice things "budget" or "throw-around" just to inflate their ego further and downplay their items to make it sound as though they are used to better.

You want a budget build?

My first road bike, the frameset of which was sitting in a box for about two years because it didn't fit...too small, or so I thought. CAAD9 with parts I had laying around - Ultegra 6600 shifters, Tiagra 4600 RD, Force FD, Shimano R500 wheels (the originals on this bike) with Gatorskins, San Marco SKN saddle, plus parts I needed to buy - NOS 105 5600 52/39 crankset and used TRP r920 brakes. Since the picture, I've replaced the bottle cages with King stainless ones and the stem with a 120mm FSA. The wheels will be replaced with Performance Titans, because I have them, as soon as I get around to stripping the stickers off them. I won't race it with those wheels, but they're good enough for everything else.

This isn't my best bike, or my favorite one, but I'd race it. It shifts smoothly and handles well.

And now that I've gotten more fit and more limber, my 61cm bikes are too big.

Or maybe he/she is used to spending a lot more on bikes but decided to set a more modest budget for this one. A super six with real design wheels and mid level sram is pretty cheap when you start looking at serottas, lightweights, and electronic shifting. Either option is possible, but I'm not going to make the judgement based off one adjective used on the internet. A BMW 6 series is more than I can justify, but it is peanuts to those driving bentleys.

Frame is Calfee Repaired Ebay Purchase. Rival/105 groupset. Secondhand 1800g wheelset.
It's a good $$$ build, found good deals. I wasn't inflating my ego, I'm new to Cat5, that's been crushed already.

I actually made a thread inquiring about racing a frame I couldn't afford to replace and opinions. Thanks to others input about prices for races, supplements, hotels and the risk of crashing I reevaluated my budget and built that bike for around $1600. Just found a brand new Ultegra Rear Derailleur, Chain, and Cassette for $50, stretching every penny.

No need to defend my friend. I make a decent living but over the years have learned that stuff gets busted up real bad racing and now that it comes out of my pocket I have learned to be frugal (plus I enjoy a good challenge in finding deals). I have 4 SLR saddles of which have not paid more than $60 each.
I always laugh at the 'newbies' that show up with their new wheels (Enve seem to be the jit bag choice) only to have another Cat 5 pancake them...

You wouldn't believe the stuff that shows up at the Cat5 clinics.

Oh Shovel I would...
I saw a 5 one day with a new SRM (PC7), I forget which Bianchi framest, Campy Super Record and some fancy Enve wheels. Dude could hardly clip into his pedals...
On a sidenote I'd be an awesome instructor in a cat 5 clinic...

Dude you'd crash em all out and send em home crying to Mommy.

The one that got me at the last one was the Pinarello with the Quarq, 7970 and 808's. I get a lot of time to look around during the lecture while Aki preaches his wisdom.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire... Might as well learn early...
I do get asked lots of questions and always try to relay an answer based on my experience - is it right? Who knows, everyone is different. What works for one doesn't necessarily work for others.
If Aki talks as much as he writes must be a looooooooooooooooooong clinic

Kinda like my first race of the season where I look over and the dude a couple bikes over has a set of Lightweights...Good on you for having the income to afford those, but in an M3 (Masters cat4/5 for the US folk) race you're nuts...

Aki talks. The rest of us keep an eye on the clock. Based on feedback, the racers enjoy both the lecture and the road work equally.

if someone has the coin to race an expensive bike, all the power to them.

it's only stupid if they can't afford to replace it when they get wrecked.
