"decoding" Jerseys

There's quite a few different jerseys the riders on Tour are wearing they've won as reigning winners - US Champion, World Champion, etc. I'm having a hard time "translating" all of them - anyone know of a site, or collection of sites where they are shown what they pertain to? For example, I'm a bit confused on the Rainbow World Champ jersey - I thought as winner of the UCI ProTour that Valverde earned the rainbow, but someone else has it. Clearly I need more education on them, but can't seem to find it easily.

Basically:

UCI ProTour Champ - Awarded to the overall points leader in the UCI ProTour standings.

UCI World Champ jersey - Awarded to the winner of the World Championship race in each of Cycling's disciplines: Road Race, Time Trial, and the various Track events (individual pursuit, team pursuit, etc.) Current World Champs get to wear the white jersey/rainbow stripes ONLY when racing in their discipline (hence why Cancellara wears regular CSC kit during road race stages, but stripes in time trials). The World Champ gets the stripes for one year; after that, a new world champion is crowned. All former world champions are allowed to display the rainbow stripes on their jersey sleeves and collars/helmets, signifying they are a past world champion. See Lance Armstrong:

National Champion jerseys are awarded in a fashion similar to World Champ jerseys - one winner per discipline. Each participating country will host a race to determine its national champion. Not all countries participate in all disciplines.

There are also national champion jerseys (flags of the various nations), best young rider jerseys (usually white), sprinters jerseys (usually green), KOM jerseys (usually polka dots), most aggressive rider markings (usually red numbers) and of course the leader's jersey (yellow - TdF /pink - GdI /gold - VdE)

Do I dare make the comment that only those people who earn these jerseys should wear them. <Putting my fingers in my ears, waiting for the explosion> Last time I made this statement I caused quite a controversy.

Who cares?

As long as you don't try to show up to a P/1/2 race and fake the funk. Considering most people are non-racers or lifetime CAT-4s, it's not like anyone is going to mistake someone for the champion of Kazakhstan...

Do you have examples of current world or national champions not wearing the jersey that they earned?

Thanks folks - the UCI championship jerseys had me most confused - their site is rather thin on info details and I didn't think about wikipedia. My myself, I'd feel a bit of a fraud if I wore a championship jersey. Some of the national champ ones may be an exception - the current US Champ jersey is the height of coolness - reminds me of Captain America - just need a blue helmet/mask. I do have yellow (plain - no markings), but more for visibility than anything to do with TdF.

The Hincapie jersey should be on sale at Trek dealers next month. Retail price will probably be around $150. The "height of coolness" isn't cheap.

Thanks, I saw several commercials with Disco riding and was wondering why there was a guy in Red & White.

I read something in the fashion section of "Bicycling" about amateurs wearing pro team, & world/nat championship stuff. Basically it said that the acceptability of someone wearing pro/champion clothing is inversly proportional to a riders ability.

According to the author, non racer Joe beergut weekender in a full World Champion Quick-Step Kit with matching gold shoes & helmet is cool, but a Cat 3 racer wearing a protour team kit is not.

I think the first part of that sentence is only true in the sense that a fat guy getting some exercise is at least trying to solve his health problem.

Considering most people don't even know where it is.... you never know. By the way riding there is tons of fun.

Here's a question I've always wondered about, how do the teams get their logos all over the yellow/green/polka dot jersey for the following days and ceremonies etc. Are they just iron-ons or do teams have stocks of various sizes/colours on the off chance that a rider gets into one of them?

They are iron ons applied while riders are being tested right after the race ends.

Correct.

The podium jersey is prepared during the controle dopage with a heat press, usually in the back of a little van overflowing with kit.

The proper sublimated jerseys for racing are sent to the relevant team hotel later that night.

Nike was the official jersey supplier to the TdF and also the jersey supplier for Discovery. If the 2 suppliers are different, you are supposed to use the one provided by the Tour.

Required to. Clothing compaines pay a lot to sponsor a leader's jersey.

Does it bother you when someone on the playground basketball courts is wearing a Chicago Bulls #23 jersey? I don't see the problem if, for example, someone wants to show their support/admiration/whatever for a Bettini by wearing a replica world champ jersey. As someone else mentioned, it's not like there is any fraud involved.
