Improvements to the ToC?

What kind of improvements do you want to see for future editions of the ToC? More stages? More mountain climbs? Longer ITT? How about a TTT? Just curious to hear some thoughts about what kinds of things you guys and gals would want to see in the ToCs of the future.

Add a Mountain finish and take out the multiple laps in the finishing cities.

You won't lose the finishing circuits anytime soon. The crowds LOVE them.
You won't see a mountaintop finish until they move it into March or April.

You will see more stages.
You may see them experiment with the placement and length of the ITTs.

Otherwise, what more do you want?

Well, I'd agree that a mountain top finish would be good. I saw the suggestion for Palomar elsewhere and would certainly love to see that. Heck, I'd love to see them get down to the San Diego way at all. Getting into SoCal would help with the snow problems. Cripes, you got all of Borrego Springs area to go up and down mountains

I want the prologue to be a swim from Alcatraz island..... I think this will rattle the G.C a little better then what it is. The race is too stressful to watch with the top 100 being within 1 minute!

Same thing I want at every stage race - team time trial!

How about a real mountain stage. Have it go through Markleville. True, it won't be close to the general masses, but that will give a real kick to the overall race.

It would be really cool if the route went on the peninsula. No Kings Mountain, or Big Basin climbs ... one of the most gorgeous routes is going from Palo Alto to Santa Cruz.

Palomar would be *excellent*! +1 on anywhere around San Diego, there's so much great riding here. Maybe start in the southern part of the state and head north. It would be nice if they would vary the starting points, in future years. That seems to work well for the T de F!

I don't think the crowds would be any smaller without the circuits.

I'd like one small mountain finish and a bunch more intermediate sprint bonuses to encourage breakaways.

The ITT is about the right length and place now I think... 2 or 3 stages from the finish.

Most importantly - I'd like the Euro-pro's to consider this to be worthy of their best competition; for it to rank highly enough that they want it in their palmares. Huge leap in this respect compared to last year. I suppose that means more prize money and eventually PT status.

Due to the low interest in cycling as a spectator sport in the states you will only see the pro-tour go through bigger cities where the ads are forced upon people. I agree there is a lot of the US than there is of Europe but Americans don't have sports just to have sports. It has to be a money generator. Money is generated out of ticket sales, paraphalia and ad revenue. Cycling does not generate any of that.
Also the TOC is an early season Tour. So all the longer tours and more challenging tours are in the late season when all the riders are at their peak. There aren't any time slots open for more pro-tours.

I thought the loops around the city was horrible, especially after that crash. But the reality is that doing so really makes it more available to more people. Only die-hards are going to line the roads in the US. So you have to bring the sport to them. It is like having the Indy-500 downtown. It is the only way to get Americans accustomed to cycling as a competition sport.

Now if only ESPN would carry cycling rather than pool.....

Actually, I liked the laps at the end of some of the stages- you could hear the announcers yelling the laps to go and the crowd cheering. I thought it was cool.

I'd like to see a mountain top finish as well. I don't know California terrain, but it sounds like the San Diego area has some hills....

And a team time trial would be cool too.

But it was a great race. I really enjoyed it.

Much better camera work this year.

A couple of laps around San Fran. You have incredible leg cracking hills and its in a big city where you can get lots of crowds.

I think they could have structured the "laps" differently have the stage go through town, but have it be on wide roads with corners you wont see crashes on.

I'd like to see a mountain top finish on Mount Hamilton with an ascent of the back side. If the race had come through a day or two later it would have looked sort of like this:

Credits: Lick Observatory Cam #2

I'd also like to see a race down the peninsula from to Santa Cruz with a finish at UCSC. In addition to Kings Mountain, they could do either Alba Rd. or Jamison Creek Rd. out of Boulder Creek.

Mountain-top finish or at least mountains (hills?) closer to the finish.

Any chance of getting rid of those road-dots? Have to be a hazard.

Longer ITT...maybe 45-minutes or so.

More attacking--a couple of sprint finishes are okay, but not every stage! Glad for Stage 3 this year!

More mountains. But I think even the euro stage races need more mountains. Time trials are boring, and their emphasis on aero is just not interesting to me at all.

How about a stage in L.A. rush hour traffic? That would be the REAL Tour of California! But I say we let the peloton use the coveted HOV lane.

Drafting in the middle of a pack is fairly easy.

Averaging 30+ mph by yourself is not so easy.

Like I said... mountains. I agree on drafting -- another reason mountains are the most interesting to me. In my ideal world, the stage races would balance it where the KOM would win overall as often as the TT winner.

Compared to last year, this year added more hills, shortened the time trial, and made the TT later in the race. Those changes did make the race more exciting. I would like to see at least once mountain top finish.

Getting rid of the city sprint finishes would make the GC more exciting, but it would also reduce the fan turnout a lot. There aren't any mountain towns along the California coast the weather makes Lake Tahoe and Yosemite impractical in February.
