ToC: the GREAT Bobby Julich.......

back in the old days of cycling -- when a shimano bike had never won THE tour -- america was looking for the next greg lemond.

for awhile there the choices were lance armstrong or bobby julich. i of course fell in behind lance and i have gratuitously poked fun at and mocked bobby julich ever since.

well after seeing bobby at Solvang i've got to say i respect the guy and i think he is an ambassador for the sport.

so if the guy is full of himself it's probably because he should be! but he talked to fans and freely gave out autographs. one guy took his wife's picture with bobby and then handed me his camera and asked me to take a picture. i took a few and bobby was all smiles ... you can tell he was into it!

i asked bobby if he would retire this year.

and he said he would be back next year, and then he gave me a look like he was letting me in on a secret and lowered his voice and said:

"i have unfinished business to settle."

allez Bobby Julich. you are THE MAN .

He really is amazing, and seems so genuinely humble and appreciative to be doing this at this point in his life. By all accounts, he has mellowed a lot. By his own admission he was pretty full of himself as a younger rider, but that sure seems to have changed. Very admirable athlete. And more great pictures!

What's with the nose bandaid? Is he trying not to snore during the ride?

I ride with those breathe rights from time to time... they really open up your nasal passage and breathing is greatly improved.

I've always liked Julich. I saw an odd interview with him prior to the ToC which sort of mitigated my past perceptions though. He managed to work in his "water delivery system" and "chainrings" into every answer, which I thought was a bit shameless.

Still like the guy though, and great pics!
