Race report - Frosty Toes (Croton, OH)

Here is a short race report for my first race of the year. The name of the race was the Frosty Toes in Croton, Ohio. The race lived up to itís name. When we started at 1:00 pm it was 25 degrees, real feel around 20!

Everything went pretty smooth in our group, cat 4/5. The race was a three lap race, each lap approximately 10 miles. Lap one was rather uneventful. Lap two was a little more intense. A mile or two after the start finish line there is a 90 degree right turn covered in gravel. About half of the group made it through and then someone decided to attack. We spent about the next five minutes trying to regroup. We finally did, only at this time the field had gone from the original 21 down to about15 or 16. After that a couple of small attacks went off of the front here and there, nothing major.

With about 1/2 mile to go on the third and final lap we came up to a right turn, followed by a left. On the right turn I went a little wide and started making my way up to the front to attempt a sprint. Unfortunately when I was getting close to the main group two guys right in front of me made contact. One of the riders went down directly in front of me. At this point I had two options, nail him or grab as much brake as I could. I went for the second option. I got lucky and avoided him, unfortunately I didnít have a chance at a decent placing though. I worked as hard as I could, passed about three more riders and managed a top ten finish.

Overall I am pretty happy with the way the race went. My goal was to not get dropped. I feel that had I not been in the wrong place at the wrong time I could have probably fought for a top five placing. Not sure if I would have gotten it but I could have tried. Thatís how it goes though.

The good news is the crashed rider was fine. As far as I know everyone else had a good time. Also, cslone from bikeforums had a pretty good race and finished top ten as well (ahead of me). I had a good time chatting with him during the race.

Congratulations to everyone that finished!

Here is a little picture to give you an idea of what the weather was like there.

My race was pretty uneventful too. First race for about everybody I'm sure, so we took it pretty easy for the first lap. Second lap witha slight false downhill and a tailwind, a group of 3-4 guys went off the front. I asked if anyone was going to chase, and they said "not now". We let them get 100 yards or so ahead, when I tried to bridge, but pulled the group up with me. 2 of the riders in the breakaway were fairly strong, so I figured get with them, or chase them down. So the pack regrouped and a few weak attacks went off throughout the rest of the race. As Lowcel said, the final turn was crap, with the inside line nothing but potholes filled with water and the outside line, not much smoother. This set up for a longer sprint than I had orginally planned. There were three side streets coming in from the left. I had planned to wind up at the third one for the sprint. Rounding the last turn, I heard a terrible sound behind me and the guy in front of me checked up a little. At that point, I was screwed up as to my sprinting point and started too early. I gapped a couple of guys behind me and stayed seated for the finish. I just didn't have the legs/fitness for a strong sprint that day. I had guessed my place as 6th, went and looked at the results and the organizer has two of us in 4th. Being honest, and knowing I wasn't 4th, I conceeded to another racer. The organizer then told me I was 6th or 7th. At that position it doesn't much matter, so I went home. The posted results today have me at 8th. Oh well, 6/7/8/not in the prize list, so no worries.

Overall I felt better than I thought. That was my first outside ride in 07, and my second ride longer than 1:15:00. I use road season as a boredom breaker and mileage for crit season. I had just finished my new bike the night before and it was flawless. Overall, I'm happy.

Nice job on the race guys. That pic looks similar to the scene outside me right now. I can't wait for spring.

Hmmm, on biowheels Deer Creek is 4/8. However, on the Ohio Valley Racing website it has it as 4/15. They both have Heuston Woods listed on 3/25.

I'm confused.

Racelistings has DC as 3/25, but when you click on the registration page, it has a registration for a Hocking Hills race in June. What the hell?

The fact still remains that I have no idea about the Caeser's Creek Race Bill is talking about!

Team Columbus originally had a race at Ceasars creek on March 25, same day as OVR's Heuston woods. Tym ended up cancelling his race. A week or two ago Tym moved his race from Caesars Creek to Deer Creek for the 25th, but apparently that has been cancelled as well.

Don't trust anyone other than OVR's website. Biowheels probably got their schedule when I did back in January, posted it on their website, then OVR changed the schedule and Biowheels hasn't fixed their site. Just a guess. The 8th is Easter I think. No race that day.

The more I looked at it, Biowheels may have assumed a race for the 8th and bumped everything up a week.

After reviewing some of the links in this thread I noticed a race listed for Lancaster, Ohio in May. I don't suppose any of you have raced there? I know nearly zero about racing or becoming a racer or even spectating, how does one find a good spot for watching a race such as the one in Lancaster?

Sorry for the lame questions.
