The Ultimate Cat5 Sandbagger!

I was checking out the results from last week's races in Greenville, SC and noticed that the same guy won both the road race and crit for the Cat5 35+ races. So, I did a USA Cycling search and--lookie here--it appears we have the ultimate sandbagger:

http://www.usacycling.org/results/in...?compid=223855

Keep in mind that those are just the *reported* results. I'm sure he's a nice guy and what-not but sheesh. That's ridiculous.

that guy is STILL cat 5? He was at all the GaCup races last year.

what in the world? Yeah he started out iffy, but came on strong at the end of the year last year. Absolutely shameful that he's still cat 5.

I'm guessing the guy has been in at least 50 races if you count the (many, many) races whose results go unreported to USA Cycling.

No, the ultimate sandbagger was a guy that I raced with in the 5's. He raced on a one day card for at least a year, if not longer. He dominated almost every race he was in, winning 6-8 that I personally was also in. He finally took the hints of everyone and has moved up though.

Look like maybe he was hanging on till he won something. I'd say if he doesn't cat up now that's pretty shameful.

what is the point of sandbagging in the 5's? If you are fast then move up, I think most of us do this sport for the challenge not to unfairly win a $5 prime and a t-shirt. I could see the guy staying a 5 through the end of the year but the start of 07 should have moved up.

whatever...

raimundas rumsas races granfondos in italy for a living these days, and former pros/national team members litter the masters fields throughout the US. Sandbaggers are everywhere.

This is why promotors shouldn't offer prizes for Cat 5.

I don't know if Cat 5 has prizes in your area, but they usually can't win cash or any significant prizes. If you search around though you can find races here and there with Cat 5 prizes, so why upgrade?

Dinky trophies or medals. Nothing to write home about, that's for sure.

His results don't indicate he's dominating or anything. He's ready to cat up, but he doesn't look that fast.

cslone's sandbagger is more along the lines of someone who should just cat the hell up.

Although, I do believe he raced Cat 5 for 2 years on a one day, then moved from 4-3 in a year. At least the refs are catching on, and he is probably in his "correct" cat now. We shamed him into it too. lol

Weak.

3 reported podiums last year as a CAT-5...and he's still at it this year.

He definitely didn't start out last year with phenomenal results but after 50 races and two wins in two days last week, if he's still in the 5s race this Sunday I'm gonna say something to him

I just really don't understand these folks. What pleasure is there to be had in being the "dominating force" on the local cat 5 circuit? To see who can rack up the most T-shirts and $10 LBS gift certificates?

Hell yeah! I would so start a collection of T-shirts, if I didn't completely suck that is.

Ok sorry I find this a little funny. Last year I read numerous posts by people asking when to Cat up and one answer I heard a lot is win before you Cat up. So this guy just got his first win (I guess 2 of them the same weekend?) he should Cat up now. I would only have an issue if he now shows up again as a 5...that is BS.

This guy is the poster child for why the "win-before-you-Cat-up" crowd is wrong.

First, from this racer's perspective, what did he learn in his 45th race that he didn't already know by his 15th race?

Second, from his competitors' perspectives, how fair is it to them to have to line up against this guy?

How many "first race" threads do we see on these boards? First-timers who have no clue. First-timers who are placed in Cat. 5 in order to learn the basics: how to pin your number on, how to hold a wheel, what a 'prime' is, how to corner without braking.

Cat. 5 is for beginners. If everything goes according to plan, after about 10 races, you're not a beginner anymore. Some guys figure it out a little quicker than 10 races. Some guys figure it out a little after 10 races. But surely by 15 or 20 races you're no longer a beginner.

50+ races and still a Cat. 5 ?????? That's absurd. I can't imagine any legitimate, rational, defensible reason for waiting so long to cat up.

Bob

Good point. To be honest, I found it hilarious enough to post about given the frequent sandbagger talk on this forum but it doesn't really bother me all that much that the guy hasn't upgraded. He's probably probably a really good cyclist and I'll bet also the best karate student in his youth dojo.

To be fair to the sandbagger, what pleasure is there to be had in constantly upgrading to be pack fodder? Some people are so intent on upgrading that they lose sight of the competition. There is a reason that there are different categories. Find where you belong and compete (thats why you can cat DOWN to a 4 if necessary). I admit, this really doesn't apply to 5s (after all, they would let you cat down to a 5 if that was the case), but I am always interested to see that people are so much more willing to be a cat up and pack fodder, than actually winning. Just an observation. My feeling is that, if he continues to dominate the beginners, he should cat up.
