Superior Road Race (AZ)

I have a buddy down in AZ who has invited me down to do this race. I might go. I've tried the link from the AZ Cycling site on the calendar but it appears dead. Can anyone tell me about this race? I'm Cat 3 but I'd have to go Master's. I hear there's a lot of climbing?

Pretty psyched to do this. I've never raced outside of B.C. before.

It's a dead link from the AZ site. And I couldn't find it on google, just results for past years. I've heard it is a great race for climbers though.

i've done this race twice as a collegiate B and its got one of the more serious climbs that you'll find in AZ....and yeah, it's about the best race on the AZ calendar for climbers

(as far as i remember) you have a neutral roll-out from the town of superior and then head up a relatively short climb (~1-2miles) -do everything you can to stay with the pack on this climb or else your race is probably over. after the short climb you scream downhill for like 10 miles (the only time i've hit 60mph on my bike). at the base of the descent you head-out for 20 miles of rolling terrain, turn around, do 20 more miles of rollers, then climb back up that beast you flew down an hour ago. the worst part of the race was that once you got back up that climb you still have a good couple miles to go before the finish.

-both times i did that race i watched a lot of dudes blow-up coming back up the climb and need to get driven back to the start finish.

Holy cr@@! So that's a 10 mile climb on the return? No wonder some guys needed driving home, and probably some ice cream, and a tuck-in with a bedtime story. I'm going to have to put in some serious intervals soon if I want to do this.

Already checked: 500 bucks for me, at the student rate! Plus I'd have to include my bike. :-(

Buy me a coffee if I show?

I can hook you up with my buddy's email. He lives down there and if he doesn't know what you want, he can find someone who will be able to fill you in.

this is probably the most legit "the guy with the best legs wins" races i ever did in the phx area....it doesn't matter how well you conserve energy and stay outta the wind, that climb just blows everything up. -you should consider doing the crit as well if you come out, it's pretty technical but also really fun. and after a weekend like that a couple days off the bike and a couple cold ones never felt so good

I think I'm dumb enough to do this. Talked to my bud today. Probably going to catch a ferry to Seattle and then fly down. This is gonna be awesome!

i got some information about this race from the promoter.

its a 62 mile out and back. The flyer says its very hilly (23 tooth cog recommended)

rolling road closures

the info will be posted to azcycling.com. the promoter was unaware that it wasnt up there yet.

Cool thanks.

It's apparently not just "hilly"though, from what I gather. There's a Tour-worthy climb on the return leg.
