Wow, NL would probably be a great place for me to find used bikes.

Welcome to racing! That was a good entry race and you had crappy conditions to boot. Next: a race with hills that really hurt followed by another race with old testament wind--then, no race will scare you.
My only advice: seriously reconsider if you were going to join the empire! If you don't know who they are...you will. They have too many people. They're not bad, in fact, I'm friends with many (from outside racing) but for new racers it's an easy choice to sign up with them and you may loose some of the social element of racing. They have fantastic resources and tons of collective experience but just not enough love to go around.
anyway, welcome aboard! And nice ride!

Hi,
OK, so it's not a road race but it is a race. My first real race on the track (after 35 years of racing on the road) and I managed to do a number of things wrong in a 500m TT:
I guess there's always next time.
I did much better in the 2K TT the next day.
Yeah, I also know that I need a new aero helmet. This is the first time that I've seen a picture of me wearing that helmet. The things that friends won't tell you.

I know who you are talking about and yes, I think they are almost "too big." I would like to join a relatively small (compared to them) group so I can learn and have much more contact with racers.
When I'm out riding, I see so many people with those jerseys on! I live on the southside and not familiar with many teams that are based in the city. Seems like they are all in the suburbs somewhere. As far as hilly races, I need to lose about 20 pounds I had fun on Saturday though and looking forward to more racing and then joining a team in the fall. It's probably too late now I imagine.

I'm obviously biased, but I'd only consider one of them to be full of "collective experience". The club prez for one of them knows more about bike racing than the entire organization of the other.
And only one of them has any sort of results to justify being called an "empire". The other club just has a lot of people who occasionally show up to race.

I'm going to head off to Home Depot to get some plywood, sticks, and nail strips and start building my velodrome in Austin now.

Cat 5 race #6 for me. Last night's sufferfest, taking my turn at the front of the chase group about midway through the race.
Right after, a guy passed me saying "let's go" to try to catch the lead pack. I just missed his draft, but he went down two turns later, leaving me at the front again. I should have pulled back to recover a little, but kept pulling for the rest of the lap...'til bonktown and then fell off the back.
Didn't get lapped, and didn't DFL, but did much worse than last week.
Note to self: 48 hours is not a long enough recovery from a triathlon (yet).

I plan on "attaching" next season, just thought I'd have fun with this kit while learning the ropes. I haven't noticed any "teamwork" in my first few races...pretty much every man for himself. I do look forward to being on a team, but just wanted to jump in head first this year and meet some people from different teams/clubs before joining.

Coming in for the finish at the Pescadero RR.
** Notice the small cut on my calf and the skewer which is usually parallel with the chain stay is pointing down
** I also ended up with a nice brush burn from someone's tire, here's why!
Brief report:
2 crashes in the 5s on Stage Road descent.
One almost got me.
The guy behind me had his head down and wasn't paying attention (I was told this shortly after by a rider who saw the whole thing go down). He rode straight into the back of me!!
The rear of my bike briefly became entangled with the front of his and put me into a skid. I counter-steered and was able to keep it upright and somehow get loose from his rig!
He went down. I kept it upright and kept going. I chased down to the corner of Stage and 84, and thankfully saw that I was still in the lead group
Later on I saw that my rear skewer must have been what his bike caught because it was rotated 45 degrees from what it was before
I finished with the lead group, somewhere between 10th-15th (I guess)
I had the go-pro cam mounted, but at some point it powered down, because all the videos I thought I shot are not there... only one 6-sec clip of nothing exciting.
Finish was at the crest of an 8% grade (2 mile long hill)

I might as well pretend to show off... here I am trying to reel a guy in at the line, suffer level 100%
I think the photographer sensed (as I did) that I had a shot at it
How can something so close be so damn far?
Made it! Now time to collapse and collect my grand prize for 34th place at least I got an uphill sprint workout out of it.
